Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Consultant in Paediatric Nephrology within the Tertiary Paediatric Nephrology Service for South, West and Mid Wales based at the Children's Hospital for Wales in Cardiff. This post offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a respected, WHSSC commissioned tertiary service delivering high quality care to children across South, Mid and West Wales.
The successful applicant will become part of a supportive Consultant group providing comprehensive nephrology services, including the management of acute and chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and multidisciplinary care. The service benefits from strong partnerships with regional paediatric and adult nephrology teams, paediatric intensive care, urology, radiology, and the Bristol renal transplant service.
Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within 6 months of expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.
You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales.
Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide high quality tertiary paediatric nephrology care as part of a regional service serving South, Mid and West Wales. Key duties include inpatient care based on Pelican Ward at the Children's Hospital for Wales, management of children with acute and chronic kidney disease, involvement in dialysis (haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis), and participation in multidisciplinary team meetings, biopsy meetings, and the established transition service for adolescents.
You will deliver a range of outpatient services at the Children's Kidney Centre and contribute to a network of outreach nephrology clinics across the region, maintaining close liaison with referring paediatricians. The role includes a 1:4 on call rota.
The successful applicant will contribute to service development within the Welsh Clinical Network of Paediatric Nephro Urology, work collaboratively with the Bristol renal transplant service, and support other paediatric specialties including PICU, NICU, Oncology, Surgery, and Fetal Medicine.
The post offers excellent opportunities for teaching and research through established links with Cardiff University and access to a dedicated Children's Research Facility. The Health Board actively encourages academic development, leadership contributions, and engagement in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement.
Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
