Speciality Doctor Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

The closing date is 09 April 2026

Job summary

Applications are invited for a Specialty Doctor post to support the delivery of care within the Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health Care Group for under 18s in Cardiff and Vale.

The Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health Care Group is driving forward the transformational agenda for CAMH services in Wales with the development of existing services in line with the new Mental Health strategy and stepped care model.

Our new colleague will be an enthusiastic and committed psychiatrist with an interest in service development and with a strong desire to help service users and families.

Working alongside the teams, you will provide specialist psychiatric assessment and management to contribute to formulation and diagnosis, and the delivery of care.

As a psychiatrist, you will have experience and knowledge in carrying a service user caseload, including assessing service users with complex needs, and supporting families with care planning.

Care co-ordination, consultation, supervision and supporting other members of the multi-disciplinary team will be key aspects of the role, as well as partnership working with health, education and social care. The post holder will be supported in this role by Consultant Child Psychiatrist and with appropriate areas of skill that require development and further training.

This is a 0.7 WTE - 7 session permanent post within the EWMH interventions team (consideration will be given to those wanting to work less than 7 sessions)

Main duties of the job

Our Single Point of Access (SPOA) manages queries, advice, consultation and the referral process into our services. This model has reduced the number of referrals through providing accessible signposting and advice to both families and professionals. Contacts with SPOA result in a monthly average of circa 200 young people and families being offered a Choice appointment with our core assessment team. Referrals identified as specifically relating to an Eating Disorder (ED) at SPOA are assessed within the multidisciplinary ED clinic.

The Post Holder will work in the Core Interventions team (previously generic CAMHS) providing Part 1 & Part 2 work under the Mental Health Measure (Wales 2010)

The Main responsibilities of the post:

psychiatric assessment and intervention including pharmacological treatment and Mental Health Act Assessments within the Core Intervention Team

Involvement in prescription rota (depending on working days)

Involvement in Peer Group

support teaching to medical students and other staff

Maintain CPD

No out of hours duties
