Job summary
There has been an increasing recognition that full research programmes leading to MD or PhD qualifications are difficult to sustain for a variety of reasons and that such qualifications are not necessary for consultant appointment.
The Health Board supports dynamic candidates who have interests in teaching, quality improvement, research or leadership and will fund them for posts for one-two years, possibly longer if an MD/PhD is being pursued. Applicants are welcome from trainees in general or emergency medicine.
These posts are designed for individuals who have already made a specialty career choice but who may or may not yet have obtained a Specialty Training Number. A wide range of clinical and laboratory based research projects will be available applicants interested in this pathway will be offered a number of potential research opportunities with named supervisor. The projects should have undergone Scientific Peer/Risk Review, Ethical Review and received full approval from the UHB R&D Department. The UHB where appropriate will support you in seeking funding and a project remit if one is not already determined. You will be responsible to a named consultant and the research projects are designed to provide the basis for an appropriate higher degree for suitable appointees.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in all aspects of Medicine.The Post Holder will be expected to work at specialty Registrar level and will participate in the Medicine Fellow on call rota.The post is not educationally approved and will therefore not attract a National Training Number.
TEACHING
The appointee will be expected to help in teaching aspects of diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases to junior medical staff and nursing staff.
RESEARCH
Personal clinical research will be encouraged in addition to participating in current programmes. In particular, participation in the research activities linked to community psychiatry will be encouraged.
ADMINISTRATIVE
You will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.

The individual responsibility will include the requirement to attend training at intervals determined by the Health Board and understand Infection Control issues as they pertain to their workplace.
