Cardiff & Vale University Health Board are pleased to offer an exciting new opportunity for experienced Accredited Clinical Coders.
We are recruiting for the newly created position of Clinical Coding Trainer & Compliance Manager to support the training and data quality needs of the Clinical Coding Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of the training provision across the Clinical Coding Service and wider Health Board. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about data quality with a keen eye for detail to undertake regular validation of coded data to identify and rectify any coding errors, providing detailed feedback where necessary.
The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying the training needs of all Trainee Clinical Coders, as well as those of established staff who are looking to progress in their coding career or prepare for the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) exam to become an Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC).
This is the perfect opportunity for an experienced ACC qualified coder to progress their career to the next level.
Whilst the National Clinical Coding Trainer certification is desirable for this post, it is not a necessary requirement to apply. However, the successful applicant will be expected to work towards this certification within agreed timeframes.

- The post holder will be responsible for the management of the training provision across the Clinical Coding Service and wider Health Board to promote a greater understanding of the importance of Clinical Coding and to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of all specialties in accordance with national data standards.
- The post holder will be an essential member of the senior management team of the Clinical Coding Service and will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of best practices and processes to ensure timely and the highest quality across the Health Board.
- They will assist the Clinical Coding Manager (CCM) and Head of Clinical Coding (HoCC) in leading the development and implementation of innovative approaches to Clinical Coding practice in Cardiff & Vale University Heath Board (CAVUHB), ensuring that it is informed by best practice in Wales, the wider UK and internationally.
- Support the Head of Clinical Coding in meeting the training needs of the department, including preparing staff for National Clinical Coding Qualification and Internal Clinical Coding Assessment. With support from the management team and senior coders, undertake regular mock exams with those staff nearing the exam.
- Be responsible for developing a long-term training and compliance strategy, enabling the function to monitor, evaluate and develop reports on all non-compliance issues around coding completeness and quality of coding.
- Plan and deliver training to clinical coders including NCCQ Revision Workshops, speciality workshops and run sessions e-learning/workshops for all clinical coders and review complex clinical information and translate documentation into case studies for training use.
- To support the Head of Clinical Coding in the development of a high quality, robust clinical coding service for CAVUHB, ensuring that coded data meets local and national targets for completeness, accuracy, and timeliness and be prepared to provide temporary cover in their absence.
- To support the Head of Clinical Coding in identifying where the Clinical Coding Service can be made more effective, efficient, and relevant through the application of new technologies or skills, working closely with the senior management team.
- Help to develop, deliver and evaluate the Internal Clinical Coding Assessment. Assist with the education of clinical staff regarding ICD10 and OPCS4 as well as other Health Board staff, which will include administrative staff, ward clerks and secretaries.
- Assist in developing and delivering clinical coding training to improve data quality and raise awareness of changing coding practices. These may conflict with current/historic working practices and will require clear guidance and excellent change management skills.
- Responsible for maintaining and ordering and developing training materials.
- Line Management of Trainee Clinical Coders to include: workload and allocation, identifying the training needs of each trainee and developing the necessary training pathways/ plans, playing an active role in recruitment, sickness absence and grievance matters along with the Clinical Coding Manager and Head of Clinical Coding.
