Applications are invited for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow (higher) in Neurosurgery with an interest in Skull Base and endoscopic pituitary surgery, to commence on 1st August 2026.

The South Wales skull base team is a dynamic and busy team consisting of three Consultant Neurosurgeons and one Clinical Nurse Specialist supported by ENT, radiology, oncology, ophthalmology, maxillofacial surgery and audio vestibular medicine managing a wide spectrum of skull base pathologies using both open and/or endoscopic approaches.

Stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiotherapy are provided directly by the team using LINAC technology based at Velindre Cancer Centre. Pituitary services are supported by a monthly MDT with three neurosurgeons, endocrinologists and the skull base/pituitary clinical nurse specialist.

A broad portfolio of research is undertaken in the Neurosurgical department including stem cell and neural transplantation, neurogenetics, and neuroepidemiology. Close academic links are enjoyed with the University Schools of Biosciences and Psychological Medicine and Medical Genetics. Cardiff and Vale UHB have a major role in R&D and supports opportunities to develop clinical research studies including therapeutic trials. The Cardiff and Vale University health board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Main duties of the job

The skull base clinical fellow will work with our three skull base neurosurgeons, and will be involved in operating lists, dedicated skull base clinic , fortnightly skull base MDT and monthly pituitary MDT. Exposure to endoscopic anterior skull base surgery and lateral skull base surgery will be provided.

The post will involve providing clinical care for patients on the neurosurgical wards and ITU. The senior clinical fellow candidate will have a dedicated consultant clinical supervisor and will be expected to participate in teaching sessions.

The post holder will also be involved with general neurosurgical clinical commitments including general neurosurgical clinics and the neurosurgery on-call rota and will have access to the same opportunities as the doctors in training who they will work alongside.

In addition to a clinical role there will be opportunities to undertake specific research projects within the department.

  • MBBS or Equivalent
  • MRCS(UK) full diploma or equivalent at time of appointment
  • Current GMC Registration with a Full License to Practice
  • FRCS (Neuro.Surg)
  • Training in Radiation Protection or agreement to attend next available course

Desirable

  • Intercalated Degree
  • Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD (where research thesis not part of first medical degree)
