AOS/Medicine Specialist SLT Post
The closing date is 13 January 2026
Job summary
Are you looking to make a real difference in the lives of people living with cancer?
We have an exciting opportunity to develop and shape Speech and Language Therapy within the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) at the University Hospital of Wales. The AOS supports patients admitted with complications of cancer, side effects of treatment, or new cancer diagnoses, ensuring timely, expert care that enhances experience, enables early discharge, and avoids unnecessary admissions.
You'll lead the development of SLT within AOS while providing clinical sessions in Acute Medicine, supporting and supervising junior colleagues across Medicine, Specialist, and Surgical wards.
Join a service with a strong ethos of support, regular training, and peer supervision. You'll also benefit from close links with the Acute and Head & Neck SLT teams and wider CPD opportunities.
Our team is welcoming, supportive, and committed to staff wellbeing and professional growth.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to lead and develop the SLT component of the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) at the University Hospital of Wales. Working with a well-established multidisciplinary team including physicians, oncologists, nurse practitioners, and AHPs, you will provide expert clinical leadership and specialist input to support people with cancer.
Based primarily within unscheduled and emergency care, you will deliver front-door services, offering rapid assessment and treatment for patients with cancer. You'll manage your own caseload, planning and evaluating interventions while communicating sensitively with patients, families, and colleagues.
You will also lead SLT provision for the Acute-oncology pathway, coordinating therapy across the acute wards and wider clinical pathway. As this service is in its early stages, you will help shape and refine its development using service improvement methodology and contribute to outcome evaluation to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care.
Collaboration with Velindre Cancer Centre, community teams, and the Prehab2Rehab service will be key to success.
This post is 0.8 WTE, with flexible or part-time options available. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable; applications from both Welsh and English speakers are welcome. Our team embraces the Health Board's values of kindness, respect, trust, integrity, and personal responsibility.
