Job summary
Applications are invited for the above post from enthusiastic doctors to join our Emergency Department team in Cardiff. This post is to cover vacancies on the GPVTS scheme and is available to start from4th February 2026 for 6 months.
Whilst this post is not recognised for training, successfully appointed applicants will work the same rota, receive clinical supervision, protected study leave and study budget as doctors in training working on the same tier.
We are a large unit in a University Hospital setting seeing approximately 120,000 new patients per annum. We provide acute care for adults and children with needs ranging from minor injury to critical illness. There is extended Consultant shop-floor supervision 7 days per week.Consultants working in the department have close links with Cardiff University, the All Wales School of Emergency medicine and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and can offer mentorship and career advice to successful applicants.
The rotation is offered on a fixed term service contract for 6 months only.
Main duties of the job
The post holders would work at junior doctor level in the Emergency Unit. We would support the individual to develop skills and competencies across the breadth of Emergency Medicine, including but not limited to ultrasound, observational medicine, pre-hospital, paediatrics, frailty. The clinical work in the Emergency Unit is well supported by middle grades and consultants throughout the 24/7 period. This is an opportunity to further develop and embed clinical skills and experience in emergency medicine.
To further support the career development of the post holder the post is split into 80% clinical work and 20% professional development. We are able to offer development opportunities in clinical leadership, innovation, quality improvement and research and could support a post graduate certificate or diploma in medical education or other related fields. It is anticipated that the post holder will contribute to teaching undergraduates in the Emergency Unit and at Cardiff University throughout the academic year. Cardiff, Wales' Capital city, offers lots of opportunities for leisure time including a range of unique attractions, top class entertainment, sporting events and quality shopping - all just 2 hours by train from London.
