Job summary

An exciting job opportunity has arisen to join the Integrated Childrens Community Nursing Service (ICCNS) for Cardiff and The Vale UHB as a Team Leader for Special School Nursing.The Team Leader for Special School Nursing oversees the delivery of high-quality nursing care for children and young people with complex health needs in special school settings. This role combines clinical expertise with leadership, service development, and staff management responsibilities.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Leadership

  • Provide expert clinical advice and supervision to nursing staff.

  • Ensure safe delegation of clinical tasks to the special school nursing team.

  • Lead and coordinate nursing care across multiple special schools.

  • Support education staff and participate in the administration of medications, manage health care needs e.g., enteral feeding, tracheostomy care, and other complex health needs.

Team Management

  • Line manage a team of special school nurses and healthcare support workers.

  • Conduct appraisals, manage performance, and support professional development.

  • Organise rotas, cover, and ensure adequate staffing across sites.

Service Development

  • Contribute to strategic planning and service improvement initiatives.

  • Monitor quality standards and clinical governance compliance.

  • Lead audits, incident reviews, and implement action plans.

  • Multi-agency Collaboration

  • Represent the nursing team in multi-disciplinary meetings and strategic forums.

  • Liaise with education, therapists, childrens services, clinical nurse specialists, paediatricians acute nursing colleagues and external agencies.

Safeguarding & Risk Management

  • Act as safeguarding lead for the nursing team. Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns, attend case conferences, and liaise with children's services.

  • Ensure robust risk assessments and emergency protocols are in place.
