Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

Pre-registration Genetic Counsellor

The closing date is 22 July 2025

Job summary

We are delighted to advertise a band 6 Pre-Registration Genetic Counsellor post to join our friendly team in the All Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) in Cardiff.

Starting salary will be on the first point of Band 6 on 30 months fixed term contract.

The Clinical and Laboratory services merged to form the AWMGS in April 2019, together they provide the medical genomics service to the population of Wales. The AWMGS has hubs across Wales with Specialist Medical Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors providing genetic services in all the main hospitals throughout Wales. Together with Cardiff University, Wales Gene Park and the Welsh Government, the AWMGS are working to deliver the Welsh Government Genomics for Precision Medicine Strategy for patients within Wales. This is a highly exciting and innovative strategy with opportunities for staff, healthcare professionals, patients and the public across Wales.

This is fixed term post for 30 months to cover service needs.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be expected to see patients covering all areas of genetics such as cancer, general, cardiac and prenatal and will be expected to work towards a full clinical caseload whilst taking on other aspects of the role, such as teaching, audit and service development work, to gather their portfolio of evidence to apply for Registration. They may be required to cover work for all areas of Wales depending on service needs and rotate through other areas within the service, which could involve secondments at other locations. There will be a mixture of virtual, phone and face to face clinics. On completion of the fixed term appointment, prospects for permanent employment within Wales are excellent. For individuals with aptitude and commitment there are opportunities to progress through the career pathway of a Genetic Counsellor.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who is motivated to pursue a career within Wales.

*Please note, completion of this fixed term post will not mean you are a registered genetic counsellor. Submission of a portfolio which meets all the relevant standards will be required in order to achieve registration.*
