Job summary
An exciting opportunity exists for a conscientious, motivated and innovative speech therapist to work within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board Flying Start service. We require enthusiastic and positive practitioners who are pro-active and have a 'can do approach'.
The postholder will implement Flying Start speech and language initiatives to children aged 0-4 years old, living in or accessing services in the socially disadvantaged Flying Start designated areas of Cardiff. The nature of the service delivered may evolve and change overtime to reflect approved Flying Start funded projects. These patients will be seen at various sites across Cardiff. They will work as a member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT), and liaise with other agencies and disciplines in relation to specific patients. The post holder will participate in best practice initiatives, provide observation placements for SLT students, undertake teaching/training of other professions, participate in the training of others, and supervise SLT students and Speech and Language Therapy Technical Instructors.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
To be responsible for the assessment, differential diagnosis, development and implementation of treatment packages and discharge in relation to a caseload of children with a range of developmental communication difficulties.
To provide complex information, explanation, advice and support to communication compromised patients and their families. To support them in understanding, negotiating their agreement for assessment and treatment, and encouraging participation at each stage of the therapeutic process.
To adapt practice to meet individual patients' circumstances with due regard for cultural and linguistic differences.
To work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to the exchange of information, goal setting, attending MDT meetings and case conferences. To liaise with different agencies and disciplines in relation to specific clients.
To work independently, be accountable for one's own professional actions, and adhere to national and local standards and guidelines relating to Professional Practice and service provision.
To be responsible for recognising one's own competencies, seeking advice and second opinions under the mentorship scheme.
