Senior Clinical Fellow with a subspecialty interest in Skull Base
Applications are invited for the of post Senior Clinical Fellow (Higher) in Neurosurgery with an interest in Skull Base, to commence on 1st August 2024.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic Skull Base neurosurgical team consisting of three Consultant Neurosurgeons and one Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The South Wales skull base service includes a dedicated joint skull base clinic and fortnightly MDT, supported by neurosurgery, otolaryngology, radiology, oncology, ophthalmology, maxillofacial surgery and audio vestibular medicine. There is a skull base/pituitary clinical nurse specialist. Stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiotherapy are provided directly by the team using LINAC technology based at Velindre Cancer Centre. Pituitary services are supported by a monthly MDT with 3 neurosurgeons, 2 endocrinologists and 2 endocrine clinical nurse specialists.
The post holder will participate on the Neurosurgery on-call rota and will have access to the same opportunities as the doctors in training who they will work alongside. In addition to a clinical role there will be opportunities to undertake a specific research projects within the department.
The post will involve providing clinical care for patients on the neurosurgical wards, the opportunity to attend clinic and theatre sessions alongside our Neurosurgical Consultant team.
Main duties of the job
The clinical fellow in skull base will work with our 3 skull base neurosurgeons, including operating lists, dedicated skull base clinic and fortnightly skull base MDT and monthly pituitary MDT and clinic. Exposure to endoscopic anterior skull base surgery and lateral skull base surgery will be provided.
The post will involve providing clinical care for patients on the neurosurgical wards and ITU as well as theatre and MDT responsibilities. The senior clinical fellow candidate will have a dedicated consultant clinical supervisor and will be expected to participate in weekly teaching sessions.
There is a dedicated skull base SRS service with on-site planning and clinic.
They will also be involved with general neurosurgical clinical commitments including general neurosurgical clinics and general on call duties.
A broad portfolio of research is undertaken including stem cell and neural transplantation, neurogenetics, and neuroepidemiology. Close academic links are enjoyed with the University Schools of Biosciences and Psychological Medicine and Medical Genetics. Cardiff and Vale UHB has a major R&D role and supports opportunities to develop clinical research studies including therapeutic trials. The UHB is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic neurosurgical team consisting of twelve Consultant Neurosurgeons as well as a Professorial Academic Unit.
