Job summary

An exciting opportunity exists within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board's Digital Operations Department for IT Server Support Officer.

The Server Team maintains two data centres supporting multiple virtual server farms which in turn support more than seven hundred serverinstances. These sit astride one of the largest data networks within the NHS Organisation and provide the bedrock of digital services within theHealth Board.

Successful applicants will provide and develop the technical skills required to maintain the health and well being of severs and storage infrastructure in order to ensure delivery of clinical and business services within the Health Board.

This infrastructure is currently based on a National AD domain, VMWare, Windows Server, Linux and Veeam and O365. A number ofservers/services will be moving to Azure/cloud in the future. The role will include both ongoing day to day support as well as development, buildand implementation of this infrastructure. Maintenance of security within the infrastructure will be a key responsibility including maintainingmigration and upgrade pathways and plans.

Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic and will want to work into a rapidly changing environment full of interesting challenges.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

Installation and Maintin support IT Systems and related server and desktop applications.Support the Windows Domain.Comply with all Health Board policies within IT Server Systems (Security, DR, BC, AV, perfomance Monitoring, patching ETC).Monitor the security and performance of the Health Board's IT Server Systems and infrastructure.Develop and specify appropriate hardware and software to support those systems designated your principal responsibility. Liaise with other Health Board departments and 3rd party suppliers, as necessary, to deliver agreed levels of availability, service and system performance.Train members of the Server Team and other IT Staff in the use of those systems designated your principal responsibility in line with DR policy requirements.Develop a level of technical competence at both hardware and software level which will facilitate the performance of routine tasks.Participate in the IT on call rota as directed by the Server Team Manager.Any additional duties that may be defined by the Server Team Manager or Head of Digital Operations.

The implementation and support of the Health Boards IT systems. Provide third line support to IT staff and users where appropriate.

The term IT Server Systems (Microsoft) refers to networked IT Systems (principally, but not necessarily, File, Application or Infrastructure Servers) based on the Microsoft Windows server operating system (including Terminal server).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Installation and support of the Health Boards IT Server Systems (Microsoft) and related server and desktop applications.
  • Support the Windows Domain within the Health Board including user (and email) account creation and maintenance, home space and login script maintenance and database administration.
  • Comply with all Health Board policies relating to Health Boards IT Server Systems (Microsoft) (in particular the IT Security Policy and the IT Disaster Recovery policy).
  • Maintain the Health Boards IT Systems Audit Databases.
  • Comply with agreed system security (including antivirus measures) and operational procedures on the Health Boards IT Server Systems. Support the deployment of agreed releases, updates, upgrades and patches.
  • Monitor the security and performance of the Health Boards IT Server Systems (Microsoft) and infrastructure.
  • Install, administer, support and manage those systems designated your principal responsibility (Email, MIS etc.) in line with agreed procedures and policies, including administration and performance monitoring.
