Job summary

The All Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) currently has an opening for a qualifiedSection Lead to join the All Wales Medical Genomics Service working flexibly for 37.5 hours per week. The post holder would be leadingone of the Cancersectionswith the objective ofdelivering current andimplementing new genomic services; working with a dedicated team of Clinical Scientists and Genetic Technologists to achieve an improvement in patient care across Wales.

We will be at the forefront of developing these services in the UK, working with Clinician's and patients' to identify what success looks like as a result of expandedgenomictesting in Wales.

Main duties of the job

The All Wales Genetic Laboratory provides national diagnostic services throughout Wales and also specialist services for the UK and worldwide. The service is rapidly evolving, responding to the changing needs of service users and genomic technologies. The laboratory service is closely integrated with many clinical disciplines, reflecting the growing number of specialties utilising genomic technologies.

  • The post holder will be the Lead for one of the Clinicalsections in theGenetics Laboratory, and responsible for the workload and activity of staff within thatsection.
  • The post holder will be an authorising member of the senior Genetics Laboratory team.
  • To lead research and service development within the assignedsectionof theGenetics Laboratory working with relevant clinicians across Wales and theUK.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

  • Clinical Scientist Registration
  • Royal College of Pathologists part 1 membership (Genetics or relevant subject); equivalent of highly specialist post-MSc training.

Experience

  • Sufficient experience of clinical genetics / specialist genetic services
  • Broad general expertise in the delivery of a wide range of specialised, complex and non-routine molecular genetic diagnostic work.
  • Experience in introducing and evaluating new techniques
  • Experience of managing people or tasks in a laboratory environment

Skills

Essential

  • Ability to manage staff effectively
  • Highly develop laboratory skills for precise micro-manipulation of clinical samples.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, organisational and planning skills
  • Able to critically analyse and interpret scientific data

Special Knowledge

Essential

  • Highly developed specialist knowledge of genetics, over several disciplines of common disorders served by the laboratory and the UK Genetic testing Network (UKGTN) and/or specialist genetic services.
