Job summary
This post is fixed term/secondment for 12 months to meet the needs of the service.
We have a rare and exciting Band 7 opportunity to continue development of Occupational Therapy service delivery for the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Haematology pathway. This is a temporary fixed term position and we are seeking a dynamic and experienced occupational therapist to work within the BMT/ CAR-T Therapy Pathway including Prehabilitation, optimising patients pre bone marrow transplant. Most patients accessing this service receive "cellular therapy" either stem cell transplantation: autologous (self-donor) or allogeneic (related or unrelated donor). CAR-T Therapy service using genetically modified cells is currently provided to up to 15 per patients per year and is projected to expand significantly.
Main duties of the job
The main aim of the service is to optimise independence in patients who are partaking in the whole BMT/CAR-T pathway. You would support the MDT Prehabilitation Clinic on a weekly basis based at UHL with requirement to provide further Occupational Therapy at both in-patient and post-transplant stages of the pathway. Delivery at prehabilitation stage of the pathway promotes opportunity to address occupational balance pre-transplant including health promotion in the form of self-management techniques, fatigue management, relaxation, sleep hygiene and anxiety management plus provision of adaptive equipment to improve wellbeing and independence.
Within the inpatient ward, the occupational therapist as a core member of the MDT works closely with the BMT/CAR-T multidisciplinary team providing assessment and promotion of health due to the significant impact this can have on physical and mental wellbeing. Post treatment intervention requires optimising recovery through rehabilitation and improving management of symptoms over a longer period of time.
This is a great opportunity to develop leadership, clinical and professional skills informing delivery of Occupational Therapy for this specialist pathway.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
