Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for suitably qualified Genetic Counsellors to join the All Wales Medical Genetics Service (AWMGS). The posts being offered are permanent, full time positions covering all aspects of genetic counselling. The applicant will be able to choose whether they wished to be based at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, Singleton Hospital in Swansea or Wrexham Maelor Hospital in Wrexham, regardless of base the applicant will be employed by the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. They will have a caseload that covers the whole of Wales.

The post holder will be a member of a multidisciplinary team offering support and information to individuals and families across Wales. The post holder will demonstrate excellent counselling skills and have a clear insight into the psycho-social impacts of the disorders encountered and appropriate strategies to manage them.
Main duties of the job
To provide a high quality genetic counselling service at regional specialist level for the population in Wales within the All Wales Medical Genetic Service. This may mean helping to cover patients across our respective hubs in Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham.
To help individuals and families deal with a genetic disorder. This is to be achieved by helping the clients and their families to:
- Comprehend the medical facts, including the diagnosis, probable course of the disorder, and the available management
- Appreciate the way in which heredity contributes to the disorder, and the risk of recurrence in specified relatives
- Understand the alternatives for dealing with the risk of recurrence
- Help the clients choose the course of action which seems to them most appropriate
- Make the best possible adjustment to the disorder in an affected family member and/or the risk of recurrence of that disorder To act as a significant education resource, both for the wider health care system and trainees in clinical genetics and genetic counselling.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
