Job summary
Applications are invited for a Consultant in Colorectal & Emergency General Surgery.
General surgery activity is based mainly at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), with Endoscopy and Day Case Surgery also undertaken at University Hospital Llandough (UHL). UHW is a busy tertiary referral hospital and Major Trauma Centre for the South Wales region. All general surgery emergency attendances are seen at UHW. Currently all expected GP referrals are assessed in the Surgical Assessment Unit and emergency unit referrals and out-of-hours referrals are seen in the emergency unit assessment areas. Patients requiring emergency surgery are managed within three 24/7 CEPOD lists with three half-day dedicated General Surgery emergency lists aimed at managing hot gallbladders and other ambulatory emergencies.
There is a dedicated 24/7 same-day emergency care (SDEC) unit and acute admissions ward supported by expansion of the medical workforce and development of advanced nurse practitioners. Alongside existing CEPOD theatre lists for the most urgent cases, the ambition is to develop Emergency General Surgery as a dedicated specialty whilst maintaining existing sub-specialist input.
Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to contribute to the day to day work of the Colorectal Surgery Department. The appointee will have dedicated main theatre time, outpatient clinics and day surgery operating lists. Independent colonoscopy accreditation would be of value and experience in a sub-specialty interest within colorectal surgery that compliments existing skill-sets would be advantageous. The post holder will participate in the unselected emergency on-call, contribute to 'planned emergency operating lists' (SDEC lists) and will be expected to develop a managerial / teaching or clinical improvement role within emergency general or trauma surgery.
You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £91,722 per annum to £119,079 per annum plus a further £26,672 per annum available in Commitment Awards. Consultants in Wales paid on one of the first three points of the substantive Consultant pay scale also receive a Wales recruitment incentive payment.
Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.
