Job summary

Applications are invited for a fixed term specialty doctor in Genitourinary Medicine, based at Cardiff Royal Infirmary. This post is available with immediate effect and is available for a 6 month period and will be a 0.2 WTE post based primarily in Cardiff Royal Infirmary.

Consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

The post offers excellent experience in Genitourinary and HIV Medicine as well as Contraception with a dynamic and enthusiastic team and provides a full educational programme with regular tutorials and seminars. This post offers a GP or any other doctor with a baseline knowledge of sexual health and/or contraception, the opportunity to update and enhance their skills in this field. With a growing interest in GP Practices wanting to provide more services for their local population, this placement may also help to support service expansion in Primary Care.

Main duties of the job

This post comprises 2 sessions and the post-holder will work alongside the department's consultants,in diagnosing and managing STI's, assessing and providing contraception and advise on safer sex. The post would suit general practitioners or community practioners wishing to work in Sexual & Reproductive Health and Genito-Urinary Medicine.

The post is based at Cardiff Royal Infirmary; Department of Integrated Sexual Health (DOSH) but the post holder may also be asked to work at one of the community clinic sites.

The post holder will assess, advise on and prescribe a wide range of contraception including Long Acting Reversible Contraception. He/she will provide advice and supervision for nursing staff working in nurse-led clinics and alongside medical staff. He/she will review and act on abnormal results of investigations, arrange adequate referrals to associated disciplines.

In central DOSH the post-holder will be trained in history-taking and examination of patients attending the clinic in order to learn independent working under supervision of the consultant.

The post holder will be involved in the assessment of the sexual health of young people and of patients referred to us from the Sexual Assault Referral Centre.

The post holder will be trained to work independently but always under the supervision of the consultants and other senior clinical staff and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
