Job summary

Forming part of the Estates Maintenance Team the Apprentice candidate will be working alongside the various positions within the department gaining detailed and specific knowledge of mechanical, electrical and building skills, required to support and maintain the ongoing planned and reactive maintenance of a large University Health Board.

This will provide both technical and hands on experience to successfully complete an Apprenticeship either as an electrical, mechanical or building craftsperson with a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification and accreditation. It will be the responsibility of the apprentice to maintain regular contact with their assessor and meet all required deadlines.

This specially selected training will contribute to providing a high level of patient experience, ensuring the day-to-day maintenance service is carried out to a high standard, whilst providing a safe environment for patients, public and staff.

Main duties of the job

Typical areas of work include the following:

  1. Air conditioning equipment and controls, including theatre handling units e.g. laminar flow systems
  2. Heating and hot water controls, boiler controls and associated equipment
  3. Heating pipework and systems, including steam to low pressure hot water heat exchangers
  4. Compressed air plant
  5. Industrial air plant and pneumatic controls
  6. Pressurised systems
  7. Boiler house industrial steam boilers - gas and oil-fired combustion equipment
  8. Steam and condense pipework and associated valves, steam traps, fittings etc
  9. Pneumatic tube system
  10. Pumping stations
  11. Hydrotherapy pools
  12. Portable equipment
  13. Power circuits
  14. Lifts
  15. Low voltage switchgear
  16. Emergency generators and associated switchgear
  17. Battery systems and uninterruptable power supplies
  18. Catering equipment
  19. Gas fired commercial and steam heated equipment
  20. Human waste macerating machines
  21. Building Management Systems - BMS
  22. Carpentry
  23. Building Fabric Components & Equipment
  24. Internal & External Repair of Structural Components

This post is fixed term for 48 months to meet the needs of the service.
