Main duties of the job

The Speech-Language Pathologist provides assessment, diagnosis, and intervention services for infants, children, and families within government early intervention and community health programmes.

The post holder supports optimal communication development and swallowing/feeding skills through evidence-based practice, family-centred care, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct developmental screenings and comprehensive assessments of speech, language, communication, and feeding/swallowing disorders.
  • Diagnose communication and related disorders and prepare clear, professional reports with recommendations.
  • Develop and implement individualized, evidence-based intervention plans.
  • Provide direct therapy services in clinic, community, or home-based settings as required.
  • Deliver parent/caregiver coaching to support carryover of therapeutic strategies in daily routines.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to coordinate care and contribute to integrated service planning.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and statistical records in accordance with Department policies and professional standards.
  • Participate in case conferences, programme planning, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support public health promotion and early identification initiatives related to child development.
  • Maintain professional registration and engage in continuing professional development.

The post holder is accountable for offering a broad range of high standard speech-language pathology services to support people across the life-span, (i.e. early intervention, school aged children, children with special needs, adults and seniors) in managing communication challenges, feeding and swallowing.

As an autonomous professional who is the primary care provider of speech-language pathology services, the post holder is accountable for determining the needs of clients through speech-language screening and assessment, diagnosis, and intervention, as well as education, advocacy, and administrative management for the duration of service.

The post holder is also accountable for client-centred consultation and collaboration with families, care givers, educators, doctors, psychologists, and other professionals.

Duties and Responsibilities of Post

Clinical Duties

  • Provides community-based speech and language services in accordance with professional standards.
  • Provides clinical services for the management of communication disorders such as fluency, voice, speech articulation/phonology, phonological awareness, language, learning/ cognition/ executive functioning.
  • Provides clinical services for the management of feeding and swallowing.
  • Provides clinical services and support aimed at enhancing speech and language proficiency, communicative effectiveness, and functional swallowing skills through individual and/or group therapy.
  • Provides aural rehabilitation, habilitation and counselling to hearing impaired individuals and their families.
  • Screens, Assesses, selects, develops and maintains augmentative and alternative communication systems and provides training in their use.
  • Selects appropriate evaluation tool(s) for the purpose of Administers diagnostic testing procedures to determine the extent of the client's communication, feeding and/or swallowing disorder.

Consultation

  • Communicates observations, assessments and therapy plans with interdisciplinary team members, (including parents, families, caregivers, physicians, community and allied health professionals, educational staff and other professionals), individually and through team meetings/case conferences, as appropriate.
  • Provides consultation and advice on behalf of clients aged birth to 4 years, preschool and school-aged children, adults with disabilities, and seniors, in assigned settings within the community (e.g. Health Clinics; Clients' Homes; Nursery Schools; Preschools; Schools; Government Special Needs Facilities; Government Senior Care Facilities), to clients, parents, families, caregivers, community and allied health professionals, educational staff and other professionals.
  • Obtains and interprets clinical reports as they relate to the client's communication and/or feeding/swallowing needs to ensure the therapy programme reflects the recommendations contained in such reports.
  • Promotes effective working relationships with clients, parents, families, caregivers, physicians, community and allied health professionals, educational staff and other professionals.

Management and Administration
