The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Stanley, Falkland Islands is looking for an experienced Chief Nursing Officer with NHS leadership or equivalent experience to work in a friendly and supportive team which provides high quality person-centred care in a well-resourced environment for its size and location. The hospital is the principal healthcare facility in the Falkland Islands providing a broad range of primary care health services as well as a range of elective and emergency secondary care services. The Health and Social Services Department is one of the Directorates of the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) which offers a range of fulfilling job opportunities across the full spectrum of public services. Working in the Health and Social Services means that the successful applicant will be able to work in team providing a wide range of health care to our community.

Main duties of the job

The Chief Nursing Officer [CNO] is a key member of the Falkland Islands Health Services Senior Management Team. Working closely with the Chief Medical Officer [CMO], and under the line management of the Director of Health and Social Services, the CNO is responsible for the delivery of high-quality nursing care across the hospital and community, inclusive of both primary and secondary care services, this includes; ward-based care, intensive care, theatre, maternity, primary care, 0-19 and community nursing.

The CNO will ensure that nursing practice is the Falkland Islands is kept up-to-date and develops in line with relevant contemporary internationally recognised best practice. The CNO will provide professional advice, guidance and line management to nursing teams, supporting each service area to delivery high quality person-centred care and meet agreed development objectives.

The CNO will supervise the assessment, planning, implementation, provision and evaluation of person-centred care; ensuring that nursing and corporate standards are implemented, maintained, monitored and improved upon where necessary.

About us

The Health and Social Services Directorate, Falkland Islands provides emergency, primary, secondary and community healthcare as well as social services assistance, support, and advice. Most health services are based at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) which is the Islands only hospital and is based in the capital Stanley. We serve the local community of about 3,700 residents, short-term residents and visitors.

The Falkland Islands are an unique natural environment located in the South Atlantic, 8,000 miles south of the UK mainland, which is a British overseas territory with a full internal self-government.   • As an ambassador of the nursing profession, ensures self and others practice to the highest professional standards.
  • Acts as a role model for nursing staff and clinical staff, responsible for leading, line managing and supporting professional and support staff and for ensuring that each practice in accordance with his/her role, job description and professional parameters.

Responsibility for Performance, Financial and Physical Resources

  • Within sphere of responsibility, ensure self and line-report staff manage pay and non-pay resources efficiently and effectively, and in accordance with corporate standards, procedures, policies and objectives. Includes formulating and delivering remedial action plans where adverse variances arise.
  • Works in partnership with Director, Hospital Manager, CMO, Finance, Human Resources and information systems to lead service delivery in a business-like way and to ensure the safe and effective management and leadership of the nursing teams and resources.
  • Responsible for implementing effective risk assessment and management within own service areas, working closely with the Healthcare Governance Manager.
  • The CNO is accountable for implementation of systems for monitoring the quality and safety of patient care and experiences including effective and efficient patient throughput in the theatre environment.

  • Responsible for implementing effective risk assessment and management within own service areas, working closely with the Healthcare Governance Manager.
