Gibraltar - Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

This role is located in a British Overseas Territory, therefore UK legislation such as the Data Protection Act (2018) and the Equality Act (2010), or similar, may not apply.

The post-holder will take part in the T&O on-call rota currently operating as 1:4, and includes consultant cross-cover and general trauma service (excluding spine and pelvis) provision; will have clinical governance responsibilities involving audit, teaching and administration, with special emphasis on clinical quality improvement and risk management.

The post is whole time, attracting 10 PAs (8 DCC and 2 SPA) including a 1 in 4 on-call commitment with internal and cross cover, which is separately reimbursed. The Consultant/Associate Specialist team presently performs active duties in 3 weeks of a 4-week rolling period, averaging 40 PAs per 4-week cycle. The on-call provision currently attracts 1.2 PAs. Additional Direct Clinical Care PAs at normal rate may be available as an appropriate response to demand and are subject to agreement.

St Bernards Hospital (SBH) under the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) provides in-house CPD opportunities and annual appraisal with external UK appraisers. All GHA doctors are required to be GMC-licensed and revalidated.

Main duties of the job

A nurse-led Pre-admission clinic runs near the Orthopaedic clinic area and is managed by the GHA Anaesthetic team. In-patients The Orthopaedic department currently shares a 33-bed ward in the hospital with other medical and surgical specialties.

Theatre set-up

There are 2 large orthopaedic operating theatres fitted with laminar flow clean air systems. Trauma work, when conducted in one of the theatres, is well-supported with all relevant instruments and implants including most LCPs, ESIN, adolescent and regular IM nails. There is appropriate fracture NOF equipment including DHS, PFNA, Femoral Neck System, bipolar hemi and hybrid THR. Arthroscopy equipment and instruments including an ankle distractor are available on site.

There is both a brand new and a slightly older GE twin laser beam image intensifier and new radiation protection equipment. F&A instruments and implants for elective and trauma surgery are available. There is a number of well-maintained cord and cordless power drives and burrs.

Services are mainly provided from St. Bernards Hospital. The hospital also collaborates with international medical institutions for specialised treatment and support.

  • A new 3T MRI facility (private) is open within close proximity to the hospital.
  • A new on-site CSSD is to be inaugurated imminently allowing for faster turnover of instrument trays.
  • There is a 15-bed Day Care Unit next to main theatres - all elective Orthopaedic patients come through the Day Care Unit, and most F&A patients are discharged home same day after surgery.
  • A team of four General Surgical and three Orthopaedic junior doctors takes on ward work, assists in theatre and provides first on-call cover for Orthopaedics.
  • The Anaesthetic consultant/registrar team supports daily Orthopaedic lists and 3 Trauma lists per week and offers 24-hour emergency cover.
  • An in-house Pain specialist accepts direct referrals from Orthopaedics.
  • Head and chest injuries and diabetic foot conditions are under the care of General Surgery.
  • The Paediatric Orthopaedic out-patient service is offered at SBH by a Visiting Consultant from Great Ormond Street Hospital (UK).
  • The Physiotherapy team organizes the Spinal Service in conjunction with a visiting UK neuro/spinal surgeons who hold regular clinics at SBH.
  • There is robust microbiology support from a UK-based microbiologist who also oversees SBH lab services and provides detailed up-to-date treatment advice.

  • CCT (UK) in Trauma & Orthopaedics (or equivalent)
  • Intercollegiate specialty examination (FRCS/I Orth & Tr) or overseas equivalent (e.g., EBOT Exam)
