Gibraltar - Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care

Job summary

The Gibraltar Health Service is organized and modelled on UK NHS and follows traditions of British medical practice. Applicants must be registered with the Gibraltar Medical Registration Board or UK General Medical Council with a license to practice. There is a GMC exemption for candidates from Australia & New Zealand who are registered with their home equivalents. Non-native English speakers must have a good command of English. This is not a recognised training post but provides excellent opportunity for research and training. Most of the recent fellows have obtained training posts after their placement in Gibraltar. The department has been approved for CT3 equivalence and out of programme training (OOPT) by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and General Medical Council. St Bernards Hospital forms part of the Gibraltar School of Anaesthesia on the RCoA Lifelong Learning platform and, at present, is collaborating with the East of England Deanery. The job and rota are EWTD compliant comprising less than 48 hours on average per week including non-clinical sessions to help with continuing professional development.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist with the assessment and admission of level 3 Intensive Care patients under the care of the department.
  • Responsible for the day to day ward management of the same patients, including detailed ward round on each patient.
  • The provision of elective and emergency anaesthesia for Gibraltar Health Authority patients while responsible to the Consultant Anaesthetists, who are also available for advice and assistance.
  • Participation in full shift on-call for Critical Care/Surgery/Obstetrics and Emergencies.
  • Pre-assessment of patients for anaesthesia and surgery.
  • Pre- and post-operative management of patients under your care.
  • Attending trauma calls and assisting with acute resuscitation in the hospital.
  • The provision of epidural analgesia service to the Maternity Unit.
  • Assist with chronic pain clinic duties when possible.
  • To provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties.
  • Occasionally, urgent level 3 patient transfer to hospital in Spain when no other means of transfer is available and at the discretion of the Consultant Anaesthetist on call.
  • To participate in the development of the anaesthesia and critical care treatment protocols and guidelines.
  • Active participation in Clinical Effectiveness and Governance.
  • Active participation in teaching of junior colleagues, medical students and others in the health care team.

Job responsibilities

There are 7 fellows/registrars covering a full 12 hour shift ICU rota. When not on ICU the fellow/registrar will be assigned to theatre cover or other clinical areas. The rota is EWTD compliant with average hours <48 per week.The post holder will also be required to participate in teaching the undergraduate medical students as well as the nursing and medical colleagues.

Audit and Clinical Governance

The successful candidate will be expected to take part in the organisation of audit activity in the department and take an active part in the continuing development of our Clinical Governance strategy. The appointee will be supported to participate in CPD activities and participate in appraisal and revalidation as required.

The following responsibilities are common to all posts in the Gibraltar Health Authority:

  • To have responsibility for the Health, Safety and Welfare of self and others and to comply at all times with the requirement of the Health and Safety Regulations.
  • The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with GHA Policies and Procedures, the Official Secrets Act 1911 and 1920 and the provisions of the Gibraltar Data Protection Regulations.
