The Director General position is a statutory role defined as the Executive Officer of the GHA within the Medical (Gibraltar Health Authority) Act 1987. Aside from the clinical functioning of the Health Services the GHA provides, the Director General is responsible for ensuring the GHA meets its statutory duties, through effective financial stewardship and ethical behaviour in line with the Nolan principles.
Our new Director General will be an energetic, committed and forward thinking individual who can deliver and lead Health Services for the community of Gibraltar. Quality of care is the central focal point of the GHA and you will ensure that the needs of our patients, families and their carers are at the heart of the organisation.
With your inspirational leadership skills, you will be expected to develop, set and lead the Executive Team of Directors in the continued delivery of the vision and strategic direction for the GHA, to bring around meaningful and responsible changes that enhance patient care. You will also build effective working relationships with external media organisations, tertiary centres and other stakeholders.
Main duties of the job
The Director General will be expected to lead the GHAs executive team and wider leadership in response to the changing healthcare environment. This will require the anticipation, interpretation and application of best practices/policies and relevant standards from a national and international perspective in the context of the local needs for Gibraltar.
As the accountable officer the post holder will have overall executive responsibility for the effective management of the organisation and will be accountable for ensuring that the statutory duties of the GHA are met.
The post holder will be responsible for establishing appropriate operational governance systems, organisational processes and internal policies to ensure that all affairs of the GHA are conducted with the highest standards of integrity, probity and will work with the Chair to establish the overarching governance arrangements for the GHA Board and its subcommittees.
The Director General will be recognised as the most senior leader and role model for the GHA, providing visible, values led, inclusive leadership thereby ensuring this is reflected in their own and all the executive teams behaviour and decision making.

The GHA aims to provide high quality, accessible healthcare for all residents, and it operates a range of services from primary care to more specialised treatments.
The GHAs responsibilities include: services through clinics, outpatient services, and hospital care. Managing emergency medical services and accident and emergency (A&E) services. Conducting health campaigns and initiatives aimed at disease prevention and health promotion. Offering mental health care and community-based health services.
Services are mainly provided from St. Bernards Hospital. The hospital also collaborates with international medical institutions for specialised treatment and support.

- Provide timely, evidence-based policy advice to the Board and Ministers, taking into account operational realities and workforce issues, and in leading the implementation of such policies.
