Job summary

Work as a practising member of the team of specialist radiographers that work in the cardiology catheter laboratory. Working in close association with the consultant cardiologists, associate specialist, nursing staff and cardiac physiologists. Act as a key member of a multidisciplinary team providing cardiac intervention, participating on an on-call rota providing out of hours service for PCI.

Main duties of the job

  • Become expert in operating the highly complex Medical Devices used in delivering the Radiographic aspects of this service.
  • Become expert in conforming to the highest standards of radiographic techniques.
  • Maintain competence in the use of all relevant Medical Devices.
  • Help manage the radiographic aspects of the cardiac catheter laboratory including the environment and the equipment.
  • Participate in the quality assurance program for the Catheter lab equipment.
  • Manage the injection of contrast via a powered injector ensuring the parameters are adjusted accurately for each injection and the timing of each injection is optimum.
  • Participate as a practising member of, the team of specialist diagnostic radiographers in the PCI / angiography service in close association with the consultant cardiologists in accordance with the standards of conduct, performance and ethics as set down by the Health Professions Council.
  • Make the care and wellbeing of patients the emphasis of your daily duties, ensuring the safety, care and welfare of each patient throughout their examination, understanding and complying with all departmental policies, procedures and protocols.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Use negotiation and persuasion to achieve desired examinations, adapting technique when required; reassure patients prior to examinations, explain imaging procedures to gain understanding and cooperation and achieve the desired result.
  • Execute and teach the skills required to adapt techniques to accommodate patients with special needs.
  • Move and handle persons who are not independently mobile, using appropriate equipment as required.
  • Take personal responsibility for the checking of images for correct patient identification and diagnostic quality, working in close association with the consultant cardiologists to ensure that the diagnostic standard is maintained.
  • Have a general awareness of the quality of all images, advising and helping other qualified and trainee radiographers to reach the required standard.
  • Take responsibility for the adequate protection of patients and staff against radiation and other occupational hazards, having awareness and implementing of the Ionising Radiation Regulations (2017), Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 and the employers procedures.
  • Ensure each request is justified to reduce unnecessary ionising radiation exposure of patients in accordance with IR(ME)R 2017.
  • Report any incidents to the radiation protection supervisor following departmental procedures.
  • Ensure that good ergonomic practice is adopted so that repetitive strain injuries are not induced.
  • Ensure that current legislative requirements in relation to the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH and the Trusts health and safety policies are followed.
