Physiotherapist Senior I - Paediatrics

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic candidate that can lead and develop a small dynamic community based team.

The post holder will need to have experience of managing a varied caseload including providing support to children with complex needs.

You will be based in our Childrens Health Centre and be responsible for delivering paediatric physiotherapy for children aged 0-18 years in a variety of settings including schools/preschools and the community.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a Paediatric Physiotherapy Service to Children and young people, including those transitioning to adulthood in accordance with NICE guidelines, with a focus on supporting individuals with special needs.
  • To see patients in a wide range of community settings, appropriate to the age and condition of the child i.e. Childrens Health Centre, Hospital, Patients homes, Special and Mainstream Schools and Nurseries.
  • To be the Senior Physiotherapy liaison working together with colleagues in outside Agencies E.g. Social Services, Education and private Care agencies.
  • To provide a high quality Physiotherapy service using a wide range of clinical work practices that requires significant specialist knowledge and advanced clinical skills gained from experiential learning, specialist training, use of Physiotherapy evidenced based practice and NICE guidelines.
  • To ensure the effective exchange of information across the team and co-ordination of local service delivery

Services are mainly provided from St. Bernards Hospital. The hospital also collaborates with international medical institutions for specialised treatment and support.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To maintain good communication links with client, carers and all associated professional practitioners and complete comprehensive, accurate and legally compliant clinical records.
  • To use effective communication skills to gain co-operation with treatment where there may be barriers to understanding through stroke, deafness, children, special needs, mental health etc.
  • Communication will frequently require advanced verbal and non-verbal communication skills including motivation, persuasion, explanation of complex issues Sensitivity and empathy.
  • Additionally, knowledge of clinical communication loss such as the impact of Receptive and expressive Dysphasia, altered perceptions and cognition, loss of consciousness, Language and cultural barriers and dysfunctional illness beliefs.
  • When dealing with children to employ appropriate skills to engage children and their carers and facilitate motivation and co-operation.
  • To be aware of augmentative communication systems and have an awareness of Makaton.
  • To communicate complex patient assessment and treatment results, effectively to relevant disciplines and external agencies in the form of reports and letters.
  • Will be required to develop effective communication and good working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, outside agencies, families and carers in order to share relevant clinical information to enhance patient care.
  • Demonstration of advanced communication skills requiring counselling, advocating and negotiating during the case management of the more complex clinical presentations that have added psychological and social issues that affect care.
  • As Lead clinician to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with Medical, Nursing and AHPs to ensure delivery of a co-ordinated MDT service. This will include attendance at complex case conferences, multi-disciplinary reviews and service development meetings.
  • To effectively deal with and/or report to the PSM any instances of Staff abuse or conflictive situations encountered during the process of communication.
