Job summary

In line with the governments priority to increase access and availability of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people, the new Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions, working across both educational settings and healthcare sectors in England. EMHPs work as part of newly emerging Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs).

A Trainee EMHP will be expected to work under supervision as part of a dynamic team in a creative environment where evidence-based interventions, new ideas, ways of working and supporting children and young people (CYP) are actively encouraged. This approach requires flexibility and adaptability, and above all a passion for working with CYP in educational settings. Over the course of the training year, the post-holder will, under supervision, develop knowledge and practice skills to employ a range of evidence-based interventions for common mental health problems via direct individual and group support for children, young people, and their parents, in line with the university expectations.

Main duties of the job

The Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner will:

  • Work closely with EPs in schools delivering a wide range of evidence informed interventions, under supervision.
  • Develop and practice evidence-based skills under supervision to work directly with children, young people, and families.
  • Develop and practice evidence-based skills under supervision to carry out holistic and child-centered mental health assessments, including risk assessments.

Successful candidates will be offered a full-time educational programme specifically for the role. The course fees are fully funded. You will gain credits towards completing with a postgraduate degree diploma level qualification, plus guaranteed employment in Redbridge on completion of training.

Please note: Candidates will be expected to travel to the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families in the first year to complete their training, in addition to sites within Redbridge Local Authority.

This is a training role within the Green Paper for Transforming CYPs mental health programme. The post holder will work within a service providing low intensity interventions whilst undertaking a programme of training for this role. The training post will equip the post-holder to provide a range of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) based self- management interventions to children and young people (CYP) with mild to moderate anxiety and depression and/or behavioural difficulties. The post- holder will attend all taught and self-study days required by the education provider, and work in the service for the remaining days of the week using their newly developed skills.

The post holder will work with children, young people and parents with different cultural backgrounds and ages, using interpreters when necessary and should be committed to equal opportunities.

Under supervision and with support, to develop knowledge and practice skills in:

Helping CYP within these settings who present with more severe problems to rapidly access more specialist service.

  • Substantial relevant working experience with children or young people (0-18) in a health or educational setting
  • Evidence of understanding of educational systems and practice in England
  • Knowledge of CYP gained through academic study in child development, child wellbeing or mental health.
  • Ability to form a helping relationship with young people and their families
  • Demonstrate ability and motivation to continue learning and evidence of learning and development since finishing the degree
  • Commitment to collaborative working with other professionals and parents
  • Belief in involving children and young people in decisions regarding their education and clear commitment to supporting the development of children and young people
  • Ability to personally manage a sensitive, traumatic and potentially emotionally distressing caseload and demonstrate appropriate coping mechanisms
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to change
  • Experience of participating in multi-disciplinary meetings
  • Able to describe and discuss different ways of problem solving in educational settings
  • To give examples of working with diverse groups of people
  • Awareness of safeguarding practices when working with children and young people
