Our Rutland Admiral Nurse service is a well-established service which provides specialist dementia support for families and carers across Rutland, with a drive to develop the service further beyond its already high performing achievements. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, registered nurse to join a successful service in Rutland meeting the multiple, and often complex, needs of families affected by dementia.

Admiral Nurses are specialist nurses who work with and support families and carers of people with dementia. Working collaboratively with other professionals, Admiral Nurses seek to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers. They use a range of interventions to help people live positively with the condition and develop skills to improve communication and maintain relationships.

Main duties of the job

About the role:

This is a dual role that encompasses face to face clinical work with families and people with dementia and will involve joint working with community staff and other statutory and voluntary organisations. You will be employed by Rutland County Council and will be supported by Dementia UK through Practice Development, Clinical Supervision, and Continuing Professional Development.

Registered Nurse, with evidence of continued professional development

Post-registration clinical experience supporting people with dementia and their carers/families

Strong communication skills and able to act as a decision maker and advocate

Demonstrates compassion and a caring nature

Able to demonstrate integrity and respect with a commitment to quality of care

Key responsibilities:

To provide specialist nursing assessment, evidenced based intervention, practicaladvice and emotional support for family carers of people with dementia and where appropriate people with dementia themselves, at all stages including bereavement.

To offer expertise and guidance to professional colleagues, the general public and others in supporting family and relationshipcentered approaches and best practice in dementia care.

To assist with the development, evaluation and audit of this specialist area of practice and of the Admiral Nursing service.

To provide up-to-date clinical advice, support, liaison, and in negotiated circumstances education and training to other staff/agencies.

To use the Admiral Nurse competency framework to support the development of own Admiral Nursing practice.

To participate in and make effective use of Dementia UK Clinical Supervision and Practice Development.

To provide clinical supervision to others in negotiated circumstances

1. Clinical:

1.1 To meet the multiple and often complex needs of families affected by dementiathrough ongoing assessment of health and wellbeing, including risk assessment; developing, implementing and evaluating intervention plans.

1.2 To advise on, recommend and provide a range of effective evidence-basedinterventions at all stages of the familys experience of dementia, paying particular attention to loss, transitions and changing relationships

2. Professional:

2.1 To deliver nursing practice in accordance with the agreed policies and procedures ofDementia UK, the NMC Code of conduct and other relevant nursing policy

2.2 To attend and actively participate in monthly practice development days, including clinical supervision; recommended training/education, including the Admiral Nurse Competency module and the Admiral Nurse Forum at least once a year, as supported by Dementia UK.

2.3 To maintain professional registration in line with NMC guidance including re[1]validation and use of the electronic portfolio, Pebblepad, as provided by Dementia UK.

3. Education:

3.1 To participate in and/or lead formal training events such as courses, conferences,seminars and workshops at all levels, maintaining and contributing to higher level educational programmes in dementia care, disseminating Admiral Nursing work, and promoting best practice in dementia care.

3.2 To integrate into practice current knowledge of dementia and caring, informed by research and other forms of evidence.

3.3 To act as a clinical role model to others and take an active role in student nurse placements, including mentoring as appropriate

4. General:

4.1 To contribute to the development of policies, procedures and protocols relevant toAdmiral Nursing and the health and wellbeing of the client group.
