Main duties of the job

Your role as a Residential Support Worker

As a Residential Support Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting children and young people who are often out of education due to the crisis they are experiencing. This means your day-to-day support, structure, and presence will be incredibly important in helping them make sense of what they are feeling.

Building trusting, therapeutic relationships quickly is central to this role. You will engage with young people meaningfully, communicate with empathy, and help them navigate intense emotions and distress. To equip you for this, all staff receive DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) training, an evidence based therapeutic approach proven to help individuals manage overwhelming emotions, reduce harmful behaviours, and build healthy coping strategies.

Working at Extended HOPE

Our work is fast paced, unpredictable, and emotionally demanding. You may at times be exposed to harmful or high-risk behaviours from young people in crisis. Because of this, personal resilience, strong teamwork, and a calm, grounded approach are essential.

Unlike longer term residential settings, the support you provide at EXT HOPE is short term and crisis focused, meaning your impact will be immediate, practical, and deeply meaningful.

About us

About Extended HOPE

Extended HOPE is a specialist assessment and support service based in Redhill, providing short-stay, crisis support and respite for children and young people experiencing emotional or mental health crisis. The service offers placements of up to seven days, giving young people a safe, stabilising space during a highly vulnerable time.

We are jointly funded with the Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SABP), and our team includes dedicated Residential Workers and a Community Psychiatric Nurse who completes mental health assessments and supports children, young people, and their families/carers throughout their stay.
