Job summary

The role

You will take responsibility for delivering a full range of mortuary activities and take personal responsibility for the undertaking of all duties related to admission, identification, and safe storage of deceased bodies for postmortem in accordance with the services procedures.

You will assist pathologists with postmortem examinations in-line with protocols, including high-risk cases when required and work out of hours on forensic cases as and when required. You will work under the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) License supporting the designated individual.

You will work with community safety and emergency management to assist with the development and testing of emergency response plans. You also will facilitate viewings and police identifications in conjunction with the Coroners Office.

Main duties of the job

About you

You must have a Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technician or equivalent APT qualification and have demonstrable experience of working in a mortuary setting. Experience in high risk and forensic post-mortems would be welcomed.

You will hold technical knowledge of mortuary policy, procedure, and human anatomy as well as a good understanding of health and safety legislation and working in compliance with SOP and HTA guidelines.

You will be a resilient individual, you will have the ability to deal with difficult situations and manage sensitive information securely. You will have the ability to take an organised approach to your own workload, working individually and as part of a team, whilst dealing with conflicting priorities and ensure a customer service focussed approach.

The post holder will be responsible for undertaking all duties related to admission, identification, and safe storage of deceased bodies for post-mortemIncluding but not limited to undertake: Preparation of bodies prior to post-mortem

Evisceration of the deceased as determined by the pathologist and local protocol Reconstruction of the deceased following a post-mortem

Responsibility for samples from post-mortem

Facilitate viewings and police identification in conjunction with the coroners service

Receipt and release of bodies procedure and accurate maintenance of records in accordance with the services valuables procedure

Maintain high standards of hygiene within the post-mortem suite

As an individual to which the human tissue authority licence applies HTA ensure that:

Statutory and additional conditions of the HTA licence are complied with

Suitable practices are used while carrying out this activity

You will need to be a resilient individual who will have the ability to deal with difficult situations and manage sensitive information

You will have the ability to work individually or as part of a team

You will need a focussed approach to dealing with a customer service

This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check

Technical Knowledge and Experience

Essential-hold level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or equivalent APT qualification

Desirable- 2 years' experience working within a mortuary setting. Demonstrate technical and scientific knowledge and understanding of mortuary policy, procedure, and human anatomy

Experience in high risk and forensic post-mortems would be welcomed

Ability to take an organised approach to own workload whilst dealing with conflicting priorities and to ensure a customer servicefocused approach

Demonstrate a good understanding of health and safety including infection control, manual handling, and risk assessments Knowledge of and ability to manage sensitive intelligence and information securely

Proven ability to identify and implement service improvements

Essential ability to maintain accurate mortuary records, in compliance with standard operating procedures, national guidanceand human tissue authority requirements

Demonstrate an awareness of politically sensitive issues

The role will be based in an enabled and empowered team focussed service where all the officers are expected to work as one team to assist in the development of a culture where knowledge and experience is shared and responsibility for makingdecisions on complex issues is shared where appropriate
