Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and creative Consultant in Public Health / Consultant in Public Health Medicine to join our committed, forward-thinking and friendly Public Health team.

This is a full time post, working with the Public Health team and across the Council, community and wider partners to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of our communities and address inequality.

This will be a senior appointment and the postholder will be expected to work across the health and wellbeing system, using strong technical and leadership skills to deliver public health outcomes.

Main duties of the job

As well as delivering the Councils statutory duties, you will be responsible for shaping and commissioning significant strategic programmes and working with our local communities and partners to lead and enable change. This will be particularly important as we review and develop our priorities, working in a Council that is keen to foster innovation and develop different approaches to how we enable communities and deliver support in a more joined up way.

We have strong political leadership for public health and benefit from great relationships with our system partners as well as a thriving local VCSE sector. You will have the opportunity to shape, influence and lead key areas of work within the Council Plan and our Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, political acumen and the ability to work flexibly across the three domains of public health practice are all essential requirements of the post.

You will work alongside our existing Consultant in Public Health as part of a strong Public Health management team and supportive directorate senior management team.

Applicants will be expected to be included in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List/UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists.

  • Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List/UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists
  • If included in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List in a specialty other than public health medicine/dental public health, candidates must have equivalent training and/or appropriate experience of public health medicine practice
  • Public health specialty registrar applicants who are not yet on the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List in dental public health/UKPHR must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they are within 6 months of gaining entry at the date of interview; all other applicants must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they have applied for inclusion in the GMC/GDC/UKPHR specialist registers
  • Applicants must meet minimum CPD requirements (i.e. be up to date) in accordance with Faculty of Public Health requirements or other recognised body

Desirable

  • Member of the Faculty of Public Health (MFPH) by examination, by exemption or by assessment

  • Recent extensive experience and consistent achievement at a senior management level within an organisation of comparable scope and complexity
