Job summary

Spectrum Community Health CIC currently delivers a Death in Custody clinical review service in the North of England. The clinical reviews are commissioned by NHS England for the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO). We are looking for dynamic and experienced clinical reviewers to join our BANK of reviewers to deliver high quality death in custody clinical reviews. You will be responsible for liaising with the Prison and Probation Ombudsman to conduct timely independent clinical reviews that meet the PPO and NHS England Health and Justice Commissioner's quality standards. We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated currently practicing clinicians, with proven track record as investigator and/or clinical reviewers in the custodial healthcare sector, NHS secure environments, or police detention. You will be a registered healthcare professional with current appropriate registration e.g. Nurse with NMC membership, or a medical practitioner with GMC. Main duties of the job

  • Undertake clinical reviews following deaths in custody, reviewing the care the deceased received whilst detained and in care of the NHS.
  • Undertake clinical reviews in accordance with national guidance and be recognised as highly professional and credible with partners by developing positive and effective working relationships that enhance the reputation of the service.
  • Make early contact with Prison and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) working collaboratively throughout the process to agree a joint approach, assess the level of the investigation, conduct joint interviews, and share findings.
  • Visit secure custodial settings as required, interviewing staff and reviewing clinical and operational systems and processes relevant to the deceased's clinical care.
  • Examine how and when the prisoner died.
  • Examine primary and secondary care provided.
  • Produce a chronology of health and social care events leading up to the incident.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Health care professional with current appropriate registration e.g. Nurse with NMC membership (OR) Medical practitioner with GMC registration
  • Any nurse registered with the NMC (OR) Be in a healthcare management role incorporating regular involvement in the review and support of clinical practice
  • Must be able to provide evidence of continued professional development at post graduate level and of professional revalidation / appraisal

Desirable

  • Masters level degree or equivalent in relevant subject area

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of the national Health & Justice agenda
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues and challenges in delivering healthcare services to vulnerable patient groups
  • Knowledge and understanding of current key NHS priorities and application to Health & Justice
  • Understanding of the principles of equivalence
  • Ability to evaluate the equivalence of care delivered within secure environments to that delivered in the wider community
  • Good working knowledge of the key functionalities of SystmOne (Electronic Patient Record) including consultations, templates, care plans, electronic prescribing and administration records, tasks and appointments
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of clinical governance
  • Able to understand and interpret post-mortem reports
