The Isle of Wight NHS Dermatology Service Managed by the Lighthouse Medical Limited are looking to recruit a part time, 1 day per week (2 PAs), Dermatology Consultant for a fixed term of 12 months to join our dynamic team.The post will be based at The Lighthouse Clinic with some additional options for remote working. We are a small yet very busy service seeing on average 1300 patient per month, with a proportionally high number of cancer patients per unit of population compared to other areas of the country due to its unique demographic and high sun index.

The Lighthouse Clinic runs a very effective Teledermatology service integrating primary care and other referring services that can be managed quickly and remotely. The Lighthouse Clinic is well known on the island having run the island Dermatology Service for the last 12 years and has embedded itself into the community supporting charities and running regular awareness campaigns across the island.

The Job Description will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultant's duties, responsibilities and objectives. It will cover all aspects of a consultant's professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in medical and surgical dermatology
  • Provision of out-patient services in dermatology at The Lighthouse Clinic
  • Working with colleagues, both medical and nursing, to improve and advance the dermatology service
  • Sharing with colleagues the responsibility for the management of the Dermatology Department
  • Teaching and training of dermatology trainees, junior medical staff, nursing staff, primary care colleagues and medical students
  • Actively participate in both departmental and LML matters concerning clinical governance and audit
  • Having responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD)
  • Contribute to LMLs teaching of its own clinical support staff, nursing, GP, Higher Specialty Training for external groups where required
  • In addition, there are many opportunities to support the multi-professional teaching and development
  • The Consultant will be expected to participate in audit projects associated with the department. Medical audit month and attendance of clinical meetings is mandatory
  • Will participate in clinical governance activities, risk management, clinical effectiveness and quality improvement program activities as Required
  • Attend Medical Meetings or MDT as directed by service specifications or local/reginal NHS directives.

Job Title: CONSULTANT DERMATOLOGIST

Report to: Clinical Director

Accountable to: Chief Executive Officer Lighthouse Medical Ltd.

Job Purpose:

To undertake new and follow up consultations of patients referred to the IOW Dermatology Service by GPs in accordance with guidance from the ICB and Clinical-service lead.

This will include diagnosis of the full range of dermatology conditions and initiating medical and surgical treatments.

Expected Performances & Indicators

Knowledge & Skills

Broad knowledge and experience of medical and surgical dermatology, including management of acute dermatoses.

A particular interest and expertise in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required prior to gaining of UK CCST in Dermatology.

Ability to offer an expert opinion on the full range of dermatological problems.

Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.

Ability to safely oversee and share care of patients with chronic skin problems with nursing and other staff.

Supervised training of ST Doctors.

Teaching and Training

Ability to work with, and supervise noncareer grade staff, registrars, and specialist nurses.

Ability and experience to teach clinical skills.

Management & Audits.

Ability to assist in the efficient and smooth running of the Dermatology service.

Support and present patients to the PHU skin cancer MDT.

Offer only those treatments or surgical procedures, which are within the scope of the contract between our client and the ICB, taking care not to undertake procedures which are excluded from the contract.

Ensure that the patient and/or carers are fully informed about the condition, answer any questions, supply written information if available and involve them in decisions about the treatment.

Dictate a letter or complete a template to the patient's GP at the time of the consultation for every patient and arrange to review the letters and amend as necessary to an appropriate timescale.

Discuss or refer a patient for a consultant opinion within the community service avoiding practice outside his - her level of competence.

Undertake appropriate surgical procedures only after training and directly observed practice has taken place and been signed off.

Order appropriate investigations, making sure that pathology request forms are filled in legibly with full clinical details.

Take responsibility for seeing and acting on all results, including writing to the GP and patient.

Work with other members of staff to deliver a high quality, patient-centered service including attendance at staff meetings and clinical meeting.

Participate in Audit and evaluation.
