Job summary

This role leads and manages the Psychology Service at Oakhill Secure Training Centre, overseeing the implementation of the Secure Stairs framework and supporting the development of neurodiversity and mental health pathways. The Consultant Psychologist provides strategic leadership to deliver a trauma-informed, developmentally focused wellbeing service for children and young people aged 1218. The role also promotes culture change and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to improve outcomes for young people.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide clinical leadership, supervision, and strategic management to the Wellbeing Team while managing a specialist caseload of children with complex needs.

  • Lead the delivery and implementation of the Secure Stairs framework, including reflective practice, psychological formulations, and integrated care planning within multidisciplinary teams.

  • Oversee service development, performance monitoring, and capacity management to ensure effective and high-quality psychological services.

  • Deliver staff training, support professional development, and work collaboratively with external agencies to ensure safe transitions and improved outcomes for children and young people.

    Oakhill Secure Training Centre Oakhill Secure Training Centre is operated by G4S Care and Justice Services. The centre provides accommodation across three blocks for up to 80 children (male and female) aged 12 to 17 years who are serving a custodial sentence or who are remanded to custody by the courts. Children are not permitted to leave the centre and they have all their healthcare; educational and religious needs met within the centre.

    Job responsibilities

    You will provide specialist integrated clinical leadership and management within this specialty setting as well as across the system (both internally and externally as required), The psychology led service will be integrated into the Healthcare MDT and provide strategic development in relation to psychological therapies and psychologically informed interventions. To lead the provision of trauma informed care the clinical lead will enable a cultureof learning, continuous evaluation, compassionate care, and inclusive and collective leadership

    Clinical Duties

    • To provide leadership and supervision to the Wellbeing team
    • To undertake the role of a specialist clinician, carrying a specialist caseload of children with highly complex needs,
    • Where indicated, will support transitions of children into onward care/hospital/other secure facilities by means of multiagency care planning
    • Lead on training programmes for the Wellbeing team, ensuring all are kept up to date with current practice
    • To maintain skills and knowledge of child protection procedures from the Local Safeguarding Children Board and ensure training in this area for assistant psychologists in the team.
    • Complete relevant paperwork, including maintaining the electronic record (SystmOne) and participating in routine outcome monitoring of clinical work

    Secure Stairs Delivery & Implementation

    • Provide expertise to professionals within and beyond the specialty setting.
    • Lead on the provision of reflective practice to the healthcare team and operational colleagues across site
    • To oversee the delivery and sign off of my story (psychological formulations) within week one
    • To oversee the Healthcare treatment and delivery within the Integrated Care Plans (ICPS), based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of their problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of environmental settings
    • The post holder will be an active member of the multidisciplinary team and therefore attend multidisciplinary team meetings and provide advice and support to the psychology and wider team
    • To actively engage in links with other parts of Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services, Primary Care Services, Social Services and other agencies relevant to the services
    • To provide specialist psychological advice guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to a shared formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan
    • To work across systems/providers in the locality to ensure effective pathways for children and young people

    • To identify gaps in service provision and also to seek opportunities for the development of Psychological Therapies within defined frameworks and with agreement from senior managers.
    • To participate in and provide specialist advice to relevant aspects of policy making, strategic planning, management and clinical governance in the locality.
    • To lead and motivate practitioners, trainees and assistants from all professions within the specialty and across the psychological therapies aspects of other relevant services.

    Managerial & Service Development Duties

    • To manage and provide strategic leadership to the Wellbeing team, ensuring that everyone receives support, appropriate supervision, reflective practice, annual appraisals and a development plan which ensures on-going service development that fits the needs and priorities of the service.
    • To manage the capacity of the service in line with demand and access requirements, always seeking ways in which to do so more efficiently.
    • To deal with complaints and disciplinary matters in liaison with other managers and professional leads both within and outside of the Wellbeing Team, especially those of a particularly complex nature.
    • To chair regular clinical multi-disciplinary meetings as appropriate. To take a lead role in service/business development and performance monitoring of the Wellbeing Team primarily the Assistant Psychologists and B7 Psychologist.
    • To provide professional guidance and advice to ensure professional standards are maintained across all wellbeing professions.

    Professional

    • To fully observe relevant Professional Practice Guidelines.
    • To work with Professional Leads to maintain and further develop high standards of practice, through co-operative work and peer supervision with other Psychological Professions within and outside the company.

    Training and Staff Development

    • To agree a plan for personal development with senior managers and participate in an Annual Reviews
    • To provide advanced training for specialist practitioners within the company
