Job summary

The Head of Finance is responsible for leading and managing the organisations financial strategy, operations, and governance. This role oversees all aspects of financial planning, reporting, and control, ensuring the business maintains strong financial health and complies with statutory and regulatory requirements.

The postholder acts as a key member of the senior leadership team, providing strategic insight, supporting business growth, and driving financial efficiency across the business. The role is accountable for month-end close quality, cash and treasury discipline, and audit readiness year-round.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage the day to day finance function, including financial forecasting, budgeting, reporting, and payroll

Develop and implement long-term financial strategies to support growth, sustainability, and investment planning

Prepare statutory accounts, management reports, budgets, forecasts and financial analyses

Ensure compliance with UK GAAP, HMRC regulations, and relevant statutory/regulatory requirements

Oversee cash flow management, working capital, and financial risk control across services

Identify and manage financial risks, implementing mitigation strategies and controls

Provide strategic financial modelling and data-driven insights to inform executive decision-making.

Develop and monitor KPIs to measure financial performance and operational impact

Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders

Manage external relationships e.g. with auditors, banks, contractors, clients etc

Qualifications:

Essential: Professional accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA)

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in strategic finance or leadership

Experience (essential)

Proven experience in a senior finance leadership role (e.g., Finance Manager, Financial Controller, or similar).

Fully qualified accountant ACCA, CIMA, or ACA (or equivalent).

Strong technical expertise in financial reporting, accounting, budget management, and forecasting.

Demonstrated ability to interpret and present complex financial data clearly

Strong knowledge of financial governance, risk management, and compliance frameworks

Ability to work on a number of priorities simultaneously, meeting agreed deadlines

Development of financial processes to improve efficiency

Experience in strategic business planning and decision support

Excellent leadership, team management, and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across executive and operational teams

Proficient in accounting software (e.g., Xero, Sage, SAP, or similar), Microsoft Office, with advanced Microsoft Excel skills

Proven month-end close ownership and audit delivery in an SME context.

Able to obtain BPSS/CTC clearance if required by site contracts (data access in secure environments).
