Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled Medical Doctor with experience in Gynaecology and Fertility to join our Agora Clinic team as a Fertility Consultant.

The appointee would be joining our existing team of 6 Fertility Consultants and play a significant role in shaping the delivery and growth of our fertility and reproductive medicine services across our three clinics in Brighton, Eastbourne and Worthing. This a real opportunity for someone with excellent training and experience in reproductive medicine to join a clinic with a strong workplace wellbeing culture and excellent reputation. You would live in one of the most vibrant cities on the South Coast with many excellent state and private schools and rapid road and rail access to London and other cities in the South East.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct initial and follow-up consultations for assisted conception treatments including egg donation and surrogacy

All assisted conception procedures, including oocyte retrieval, embryo transfers, surgical sperm retrievals, intra-uterine inseminations and trans-vaginal and trans-abdominal ultrasound scanning

Tubal patency (HyCoSy), uterine assessment and endometrial biopsy

Ability to participate in menopause and reproductive medicine clinics

Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary fertility team to offer the highest level of patient care

Participation in an on-call and weekend rota for out of hours queries and procedures

Opportunity to offer minimal access reproductive surgery treatments

Experience & Qualifications required:

Full Registration with GMC and licence to practice in the UK

Membership or Fellowship of the RCOG or equivalent

Minimum 2 years experience in Reproductive Medicine and Fertility and 5 years experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Subspecialty training in Reproductive Medicine desirable but not essential

Accredited in transvaginal and transabdominal pelvic ultrasound

Robust knowledge of the HFEA Code of Practice

Excellent understanding of QMS and ability to apply quality assurance, audit and quality improvement to clinical practice

An understanding of prevailing legislation

Excellent communication skills with patients and colleagues

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Person Responsible to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the Medical Director, the Scientific Director, the HFEA, the Medical Consultants and Senior Nursing, Laboratory and Administrative Staff in the Agora, Patients and GPs.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Consultant Fertility Specialist will be responsible for the day to day medical care of patients coming through the clinic and will report to the Medical Director. They will need to work effectively and safely within the terms of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act (1990) and the HFEA 9th Code of Practice

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1 Clinical Duties

The postholder is expected to be fully competent in the management all patients needing assisted conception from initial evaluation through to assisted conception treatment and early pregnancy monitoring.

The postholder will be required to:

1.1. Take an active role in all medical processes for patients referred to the Agora Clinic for fertility or gynaecology treatment including:

  • New and follow-up Consultations
  • Ultrasound scanning (baseline pelvic scans and follicle tracking for assisted conception treatments) and early pregnancy viability scans
  • Hydroscans
  • Egg collections
  • Intrauterine inseminations
  • Embryo transfers
  • Management of all patients before, during and after treatment needing medical evaluation e.g ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
  • Counselling and evaluation of oncology patients and potential sperm or egg donors.
  • Gynaecological consultations and examinations for fertility related issues or menopausal symptoms
  • Minor out-patient Gynaecological procedures such as coil fitting or removal, endometrial scratch

This list is not exhaustive but provides an overview of the clinical duties expected of the post-holder. If new services are developed, then the post holder will be fully trained in these and signed off as competent before being allowed to consult or perform any new procedures in relation to the new service.

1.2. Follow all the Agora Clinic protocols and ensure that patients receive accurate advice in relation to their treatment, risks and chances of a successful outcome.

1.3. Ensure that patient data and information are promptly entered in the Clinics Meditex database computer system.

1.4. Keep full and accurate notes of all patient encounters and advice given and communicate effectively with referring doctors, GPs and patients.

1.5. Ensure the highest standard of patient care to maintain the clinics excellent reputation.

1.6. Assist with updating and maintaining all the Agoras policies and procedures, treatment protocols and patient information and to support and improve quality standards required to meet certification for ISO 9001.

1.7. Be actively involved in the Agoras regular audit activities. This may include audit of results of treatments, patients satisfaction, delays experienced etc.

1.8. Provide clinical cover for weekends and public holidays as agreed on the Agora Medical Staff rota.

1.9. To provide emergency telephone assistance to patients on a rotational basis.

1.10. Participate in the Agoras Open Days and GP evenings (and other out of hours meetings that may be required for the promotion of the clinic). The Employee is expected to provide an actual and truthful account of the clinics performance to its prospective patients and referring Doctors.

2 Administrative2.1 Develop a close working relationship with the Agora Admin Lead, Scientific Director and Quality Manager and Nurse Managers to ensure smooth running of the Centre.2.2 Have an awareness of the Agoras overall financial objectives and work with the admin team to ensure revenue recapture of all medically related procedures.2.3 Identify, report and respond to complaints, accidents and incidents effectively and according to the clinics policy. 2.4 Provide such evidence and reports as the Agora may require and co-operate with the Agora in relation to any investigation or complaints concerning him/her, the Agora or its practice.2.5 Attend and be actively involved in the Agoras regular clinical, quality, educational and team meetings. 2.6 Ensure that all duties are carried out in accordance with HFEA code of Practice and other relevant regulations.3 Training and CPD

3.1 Continue with own professional development by attending relevant courses and conferences and feedback from these to ensure the clinic is kept abreast of all new developments in medical aspects of fertility practice.

3.2 Maintain meticulous training records of all processes undertaken under supervision at the Agora and attend yearly appraisal meetings with Dr Gilling-Smith.

4 General

4.1 The post holder will be expected at all time to respect patients confidentiality and, in particular, the confidentiality of electronically stored personal data in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.

4.2 To promote the reputation of the Agora and not to do or omit to do anything which is calculated to directly or indirectly damage the reputation of the Agora.

6 Duties of the Agora Clinic6.1 The clinic has a responsibility to ensure the Fertility Consultant is supervised and supported during the initial induction period until signed off as competent in all areas where they will be operating unsupervised. This will apply to all tasks required. 6.2 Supervision and competency assessment of all medical procedures undertaken will be by Dr Gilling-Smith or a Senior Consultant and the appointee will not be allowed to perform any new procedures unsupervised until signed off as competent by his/her supervisor.

6.3 Dr Gilling-Smith is an accredited BFS trainer and previously was Director and Examiner for the RCOG Subspecialty training program in Reproductive Medicine at Chelsea & Westminster Assisted Conception Unit and will ensure full support for all training requirements of the post-holder.
