Main duties of the job

You will be required to make a significant contribution to the delivery of our taught portfolio contributing to the delivery of the BSc and development of the MSc Speech and Language Therapy. This is an exciting opportunity for a specialist speech and language therapist in speech sound disorder/cleft palate to set up and run a new specialist secondary referral speech clinic for children with severe and/or complex speech needs and to establish a new masters level module for speech and language therapists working with children born with a cleft palate. You will have an interest in teaching and research and will work with members of the CSSHS SLT team and the Speech, Hearing and Communication Research Group to contribute to the development of SLTs and support impactful research activity. You will have extensive experience working with children with speech sound disorder and/or children born with cleft palate and will be able to show initiative and drive to develop the processes needed to set up and run the clinic. You will also build on existing work which has developed the content for the Masters module and will be responsible for coordinating delivery of the module, working closely with staff in CSSHS and external specialists in cleft who will be contributing to the teaching.

Role Summary:

The postholder will set up and run a new specialist speech clinic for children with persistent, severe and/or complex speech needs. The role holder will also lead the new masters module in cleft palate speech and both teach on this module and coordinate teaching from external specialists. The postholder will use their experience as a specialist in speech sound disorder, including cleft, and their expertise in the anatomical, neurological and cognitive-linguistic bases for persistent speech disorder. The postholder will have an interest in research. The postholder will work with other members of the CSSHS SLT team involved in teaching and research to ensure that the clinic can contribute to the development of student SLTs and to impactful research activity.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Develop an assessment protocol for use in the Specialist Speech Clinic to assist with differential diagnosis and development of personalised intervention plans for children attending.

2. Develop a referral process in collaboration with lead SLTs at local Health Boards and beyond Wales.

3. Work with research active members of the SLT team at CSSHS, prepare a research ethics application for submission to NHS ethics to facilitate collection of data at the Specialist Speech Clinic which can be used in research with colleagues.

4. Carry out detailed assessments and analysis of childrens speech output, speech processing and associated skills.

5. Write personalised clinical management plans based on the findings of the assessments and analysis carried out.

6. Carry out delivery of the personalised clinical management plan.

7. Train others in the SLT teaching team and with local clinicians on the use of the technology.

8. Liaise with the Masters Module team to coordinate promotion of the cleft masters module and recruitment to the course.

9. Act as lead for the course and the point of contact for all students enrolled.
