Job summary

To be the clinical team lead for Odstock Medical Limiteds (OML) Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Service. This comprises being the clinical lead for the Physiotherapy team located at the National Clinical FES Centre in Salisbury, as well as providing leadership for all clinicians delivering FES treatment on behalf of OML. The role also incorporates responsibility for Service development and ownership for Clinical Governance across the FES service, both in Salisbury and remotely.

About us

Odstock Medical Ltd. (OML) is a subsidiary of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust and based in the Laing building on the Hospital Site. We are the UKs leading provider of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) devices and clinical treatment. We were established in 2005 by Salisbury NHS Foundation trust to build on FES expertise.

Odstock Medicals devices have been designed by Clinical Engineers, Clinicians and patients at the National Clinical FES Centre for over 25 years through collaborative effort.

We want to improve the lives of people with neuromuscular disabilities worldwide by providing the highest quality in medical device technology and service. As well as providing the FES devices, treatment and support, we offer FES training for Clinicians so they can offer FES treatment to their patients too.

1. Job purpose

2. Duties and responsibilities

Clinical

Leadership requirements

  • Direct line management of OMLs employed team of specialist physiotherapists, based in Salisbury and remotely.
  • Indirect leadership to OMLs employed clinical scientists & engineers who provide clinical treatment.
  • Indirect leadership to OMLs Satellite clinic contracted specialist physiotherapists.
  • Indirect leadership to OMLs Outreach specialist physiotherapists.

Support other health professionals in the use of FES treatments when required.

Operational

Close working with Clinical Operations team to ensure.

  • Salisbury and Satellite clinics operate efficiently to maintain patient pathways and other activities e.g., incorporating research appointments.
  • Patient funding policies and processes are understood and processed in a timely manner.
  • Patient clinical records are kept up to date in line with legal / regulatory requirements and best practice.
  • Sufficient clinical resources are available to meet patient pathway requirements.
  • The Clinical service is evaluated by initiating and participating in clinical audit appropriate to the complex nature of each clinical area.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in Ways of Working, systems and processes.

Oversight of Outreach clinic and clinician standards, development and resources.

Coordinate physiotherapist attendance at external events, customer visits, Satellite clinics, training courses and onsite FES support sessions.

FES clinical placements.

  • Manage requests from clinicians wishing to visit OML clinics.
  • Responsibility for ensuring budgeted expenses for the clinical service are managed efficiently.

Service Development

  • Seek ways to improve the patient experience and maximise clinic effectiveness through continuous improvement.
  • Oversight of the development of Paediatric Services.
  • Co-ordinate clinical input to proposed research and new product development projects as and when required.

Clinical Governance

Responsibility for understanding and communication of OMLs clinical Governance.

Ownership for maintaining and updating OMLs clinical Governance structure.

  • Ensure appropriate competency programmes are up to date and developed as necessary.
  • Ensure new clinicians complete the competency programmes.
  • Develop competencies for other FES applications, as necessary.
  • Develop competency programmes for Satellite & Outreach clinics and monitor.
  • Coordinate regular clinical audit programme for Satellite and Outreach clinics / clinicians.

Lead regular clinical Governance meetings.

Responsibility for all statutory / regulatory incident reporting processes.

Research and new product development

Ensure clinical support is integrated into

  • Research projects and initiatives which explore applications of FES and increase the FES evidence-base.
  • New Product Development projects.
  • Regulatory requirements.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

  • Through individual review and in accordance with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy standards of continuing professional development maintain and develop the teams relevant knowledge and clinical skills.
  • To provide clinical review and input on existing and new clinical strategies as part of OMLs senior management team including the development of OMLs clinical services & resources.

Communication and working relationships

  • This position reports to the Managing Director and is a member of the OML Leadership team.
  • There is a requirement for close working across the OML Leadership team and broader organisation.
  • Close relationships should be formed with NHS Service leads delivering FES.
  • The post-holder will be required to communicate professionally with patients, clinicians and other healthcare professionals to support the clinical and teaching activities of the company.
  • The post-holder will work both independently and as part of a team as appropriate.
