Job summary

Outpatient Network are currently looking forRespiratory & Sleep Clinical Physiologist/Scientist's to work in our insourcing clinics. Work is available on site or remotely and pay is dependant on experience. The service will be running for a 3 month period initially with potential to extend beyond.

Main duties of the job

  • Conducting Polysomnography (PSG): The respiratory physiologist assists with the setup and monitoring of sleep studies, ensuring accurate measurement of respiratory parameters such as airflow, oxygen levels, and respiratory effort throughout the night.

  • Monitoring and Interpreting Respiratory Data: During the study, they track and interpret key data like apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), oxygen desaturation, and respiratory patterns to assess the severity of sleep-disordered breathing.

  • Equipment Setup and Calibration: They are responsible for properly setting up and calibrating the equipment used in sleep studies, ensuring all respiratory sensors are correctly placed and functioning.

  • Patient Care and Comfort: Ensuring that patients are comfortable during the study, explaining procedures, and addressing any concerns, as well as providing ongoing support throughout the night.

  • Collaboration with Sleep Specialists: The respiratory physiologist works closely with sleep physicians and other healthcare providers to help interpret the data, contributing to a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan for conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea or central sleep apnea.

  • Data Review and Reporting: After the study, the respiratory physiologist reviews the collected data, identifies key findings, and prepares detailed reports for the sleep specialist to aid in diagnosis.

    Qualifications

    Essential

    • BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology, Healthcare Science (Respiratory & Sleep), or an equivalent degree in a related physiology-based subject (e.g., Sport Science).
    • Professional registration with AHCS or HCPC.
    • ARTP Practitioner qualification (formerly ARTP Part 1).
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

    Desirable

    • Postgraduate qualifications in Respiratory & Sleep Physiology, such as:
    • Scientist Training Programme (STP)
    • Postgraduate Certificate in Sleep Medicine
    • Graduate Diploma in Respiratory Physiology

    Experience

    Essential

    • Demonstrable experience in respiratory and sleep diagnostics, including:
    • Lung function testing: Spirometry, bronchodilator response, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), gas transfer, static lung volumes (via body plethysmography and gas dilution methods), and airways resistance.
    • Capillary blood gas analysis, including sampling and interpretation.
    • Sleep diagnostics, such as multichannel sleep studies and overnight oximetry.
    • Treatment modalities, including:
    • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
    • Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) initiation and monitoring
    • Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT)
    • Ability to perform and interpret lung function and sleep investigations independently.
    • Experience in training and mentoring junior staff.
    • Proven involvement in service improvement initiatives, audits, or research projects.
    • Sound knowledge of ARTP guidelines, including acceptability and reproducibility criteria.
    • Understanding of relevant national and international guidelines, including NICE, ATS/ERS, AASM.

    Desirable

    • Previous involvement in laboratory management or service development.
    • Experience using NHS reporting systems and hospital software.
    • Familiarity with various manufacturers software for lung function and sleep diagnostics/treatments.
