Job summary

We are looking for an experienced surgical nurse to join our Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit as a Sister / Charge Nurse. This is a senior clinical role where you will provide leadership on shift, regularly acting as Nurse in Charge and supporting the safe and effective delivery of patient care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will coordinate the clinical shift, acting as Nurse in Charge when required, supporting safe patient flow, clinical decision making, and effective team working. They will supervise and support junior nurses and healthcare assistants, ensuring high standards of care, professional practice, and patient safety. Working closely with the Unit Manager and multidisciplinary team, the Sister / Charge Nurse will contribute to service development, quality improvement, and the delivery of safe and effective surgical inpatient care. The role is primarily based within the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit; however, the post holder may be required to support other surgical inpatient areas depending on service needs.

You will regularly take on Nurse in Charge responsibilities, coordinating the ward, supporting the nursing team and ensuring patients receive high quality care throughout their admission. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will continue to deliver clinical care while also guiding junior nurses and healthcare assistants, helping maintain high standards across the unit. You will work closely with the Unit Manager and multidisciplinary team to ensure safe patient flow, strong clinical standards and a positive team culture. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the ward when acting as Nurse in Charge
  • Support the delivery of safe, high quality patient centred care
  • Oversee patient admissions, discharges and transfers
  • Provide clinical leadership and guidance to Band 5 nurses and healthcare assistants
  • Monitor patient progress and escalate concerns where needed
  • Support ward rounds, handovers and multidisciplinary communication
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and patient records
  • Promote safe practice and maintain infection prevention standards
  • Support incident reporting, learning and quality improvement
  • Contribute to maintaining a positive, supportive team environment

  • Registered Nurse with a valid NMC registration
  • Experience working in an acute surgical ward setting
  • Confidence in coordinating a clinical shift and supporting junior staff
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload in a busy clinical environment
