The role

To practice as a Biomedical Scientist with HCPC registration and to ideally demonstrate some knowledge and or expertise in stem cell transplantation and support the stem cell manager in providing an efficient and effective service. To ensure that scientific standards are maintained and that Clinic policies are adhered to at all times. Key responsibilities

  • To support the Stem Cell Laboratory Manager, Deputy Stem Cell Laboratory Manager/Senior Biomedical Scientists in the duties outlined below:
  • Processing donor lymphocytes and haematopoetic stem cells in bone marrow and peripheral blood obtained from patients and donors for transplant treatment.
  • Collection, timely transportation and receipt of cells for processing from the apheresis suite to the laboratory and acceptance and adequate handling of external cells for processing and/or storage.
  • Coordinating with other staff and transplant registries in the collection and receipt of cells for transplantation.
  • Coordinating with ATMP providers to receive, store, check and transport cellular therapy products.
  • Performing aseptic handling of blood specimens, harvested cells and cryopreservation of cells within a sterile suite according to Good Manufacturing Practice guidelines.
  • Ensuring adequate and timely storage of cryopreserved cells, recording and documenting timings, tanks, positions and personnel.
  • To practice safe handling of and to assist in troubleshooting problems relating to liquid nitrogen and cells stored in vapour phase liquid nitrogen. To assist in the organisation and safe running of the liquid nitrogen storage facility.
  • To be a role model of good health and safety practices at all times.
  • Organising the issue and transport (if necessary) of fresh and frozen haematopoetic stem cells for transplant, ensuring timely issue to couriers and timely arrival at transplantation unit if appropriate.
  • Performing laboratory tests including, but not limited to, flow cytometry.
  • Reporting, discussing, authorising and communicating test results to clients accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Performing setup, maintenance and basic fault-finding on analytical laboratory equipment ensuring continuity of service.
  • Compliance with and as required review of policies and procedures and standard operating procedures for the efficient harvesting, processing, storage and transplantation of haematopoietic stem cells. These must be compliant with all relevant regulatory bodies and published guidelines, ensuring validation before use.
