Job summary

This Band 7 Palliative and Symptom Control Clinical Nurse Specialist role sits within the Duchess of Devonshire Wing at The London Clinic. Working Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm, plus on call, you will manage a specialist caseload of patients with complex palliative and end of life care needs, providing expert symptom control, holistic assessment and strong clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in a team with the Consultant in Palliative Medicine and one other Palliative Care and Symptom Control CNS at The London Clinic. They will be required to complete comprehensive and holistic assessment of patients with life limiting illnesses and formulate care plans to meet the palliative care needs of patients. As a member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT), they will work collaboratively with other members of the MDT to provide the highest standards of specialist nursing care to patients with complex palliative care and End of Life Care (EoLC) needs. The post holder will facilitate and support healthcare teams to implement evidence-based practice, and will contribute to the development of Palliative and EoLC services at The London Clinic.

  • Undertaking comprehensive holistic assessments across inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Leading on specialist symptom control and supportive care planning
  • Supporting patients and families with complex and sensitive conversations regarding prognosis and advance care planning
  • Acting as patient advocate within MDT meetings
  • Participating in daily ward rounds for patients on the palliative and symptom control caseload
  • Supporting effective discharge planning into community services
  • Contributing to audit, service development and quality improvement initiatives
  • Acting as a clinical resource and role model to ward based teams
  • This role requires strong autonomous practice alongside collaborative multidisciplinary working. You will also participate in the on-call rota in line with service needs. What We Are Looking For

  • Significant post registration experience within acute oncology
  • Minimum 1-year experience as a Palliative Care CNS/Senior band 6/7 level
