Job summary

This is a senior clinical role for an experienced gynaecology nurse who is confident leading teams within an acute inpatient setting. The Band 6 Sister Charge Nurse will support the operational management of the ward while maintaining high standards of clinical care, patient safety and staff development. Gynaecology experience is essential to ensure safe leadership, effective decision making and continuity of care across the patient pathway.

Main duties of the job

The Band 6 Sister Charge Nurse will provide day to day clinical and professional leadership on the ward, supporting the Ward Manager in the safe and effective delivery of care. The role includes leading shifts, managing patient flow, overseeing high quality nursing care, supervising and developing staff, and ensuring compliance with medicines management, documentation, governance and safety standards. The post holder will deputise for senior colleagues as required and play an active role in service improvement and multidisciplinary working.

Working closely with the Ward Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the delivery of safe, high quality care, supporting staff development and maintaining operational efficiency. You will deputise for the Ward Manager as required, lead shifts, manage patient flow and act as a visible clinical leader within the team. Key responsibilities

  • Provide strong clinical and professional leadership across the ward
  • Manage a clinical caseload and oversee individualised patient care
  • Support, supervise and develop nursing staff and HCAs
  • Contribute to recruitment, induction, appraisals and mandatory training compliance
  • Coordinate admissions, discharges and bed management in liaison with the MDT
  • Ensure safe medicines management and high-quality documentation
  • Lead on patient safety checks, audits and quality improvement activity
  • Manage incidents, complaints and conflict in a timely and professional manner
  • Use electronic rostering to ensure safe and effective staffing
  • Represent the ward at meetings and governance forums when required

  • Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse
  • Significant post registration experience within acute inpatient care

  • Strong clinical judgement and decision-making skills
