Main duties of the job

The Band 5 Recovery Practitioner plays a key role in delivering safe, effective, and personalised care to patients recovering from surgical or diagnostic procedures. Based within our 11-bedded Recovery Unit, this role supports services across Main Theatres, Day Surgery, Endoscopy, and Radiology.

The Role We are looking to recruit a Recovery Theatre Practitioner (Band 5) to join our Recovery Unit at The London Clinic. This role is vital in ensuring patients receive safe, effective and personalised care following surgery or diagnostic procedures. Working in our 11-bedded Recovery Unit, you will support services across Main Theatres, Day Surgery, Endoscopy and Radiology. You will deliver post-anaesthetic care across a wide range of surgical specialities, including patient monitoring, pain management and escalation of clinical concerns. You will also contribute to quality improvement, uphold professional standards and support the supervision of junior colleagues. Shift Patterns and On-Call Recovery staff work 37.5 hours per week on a rota that includes:

  • Early: 07:30-15:30
  • Late: 14:30-22:30
  • Long Day: 07:30-21:00
  • Late Long Day: 09:00-22:30
  • Early/Late shifts are 5 per week, Long/Late Long Days are 3 per week. On-call is required after probation, including two weekday and one weekend on-call every 4 weeks. Key Duties:
  • Provide high-quality nursing care within the Recovery Unit in line with The London Clinic's standards and policies
  • Monitor patients post-operatively, supporting safe and timely recovery and discharge
  • Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated patient care
  • Administer and check medications, including controlled drugs, in line with policies and regulatory guidance
  • Support and mentor new staff and students, fostering professional growth and development
  • Participate in the departmental on-call rota to ensure 24/7 patient cover
  • Skills and Experience:
  • Registered Nurse (RGN) or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP)
  • Proven experience working in a recovery theatre setting is essential
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to provide reassurance to patients and families
  • Able to remain calm and effective under pressure in a fast-paced theatre environment
  • Confident using IT systems and maintaining accurate patient records
  • Supervisory or mentoring experience is desirable
