Main duties of the job

The post holder will play a key role in delivering a safe, well-coordinated, and high-quality outpatient service for cancer patients and donor registries, working closely with the Haematology and Transplant Manager and the Lead Apheresis Nurse. They will contribute to practice development forums both within the Clinic and externally, helping to share knowledge and shape best practice. Alongside their clinical responsibilities in line with the NMC Code, the post holder will also mentor and support junior staff, enabling them to build confidence and develop the skills needed to provide outstanding patient care.

This is a full time, permanent position, working 37.5 hours a week across either 7.5 or 9 hour shifts. The unit is open from 08:30 to 18:00 and currently operates five apheresis machines, where donors and patients attend for peripheral blood stem cell donation. This senior nursing role is central to providing a safe, coordinated, and high-quality outpatient service for both cancer patients and donor registries. You will work autonomously as the nurse in charge, lead the day-to-day running of the unit, and ensure the smooth delivery of care. The role also offers the chance to mentor junior nurses and healthcare assistants, contribute to service development, and work closely with a multidisciplinary team, ensuring excellence in clinical practice and patient experience. Key Duties

  • Work autonomously as the nurse in charge and as part of a team in the Apheresis Unit
  • Deliver safe, evidence-based care to patients and donors in line with NMC standards
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to life-threatening situations or apheresis citrate reactions
  • Organise and prioritise workload in line with clinical needs
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and supervision to junior staff, students, and healthcare assistants
  • Build strong relationships within the multidisciplinary team, deputising for senior nurses as required
  • Maintain professional knowledge and clinical skills in oncology, haematology, and apheresis practices
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety and data protection policies at all times
  • Skills and Experience: We are looking for a motivated and professional nurse with:
  • Registered Nurse status with a valid NMC pin
  • Post-registration experience in oncology, haematology, or apheresis at a senior level
  • Experience working within an outpatient setting
  • Strong clinical skills including venepuncture, cannulation, venesection, and the use of central and peripheral venous access devices
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to support patients, donors, and colleagues
  • It would be desirable if you also have:
  • A post-registration course in chemotherapy or haematology
  • Experience with Terumo/Optia apheresis machines
  • Leadership or management qualifications
  • Skills in difficult IV cannulation using ultrasound
