Job summary
Contract Type: Fixed Term (6 months in the first instance, from July 2025, with the likelihood of a further extension up to 12 months in total)
Hours of work: 30 - 37.5 hours per week
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Social Work Service at St Josephs Hospice in the role as Welfare Benefits Lead.
You will work as part of committed and creative team, which offers responsive social care interventions and support to people with specialist palliative and end life care needs. The Welfare Benefits post-holder provides a highly specialist service of welfare benefits expertise, advice, advocacy, practical assistance and signposting to patients, carers and their families to maximize their income. The post-holder also trains, supervises and provides caseload management to a small, committed team of Welfare Benefits volunteers.
The post is fixed term for 6 months in the first instance, with likelihood of further extension of up to 12 months from July 2025. The post is also open to candidates who may wish to apply for the role as a secondment from their substantive post. In this case, the applicant should have the in-principle support of their line manager before applying.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for someone who:
- Has demonstrable experience of undertaking complex and specialist financial assessments, providing advice on entitlement to benefits, credits, other awards and in assisting with making appropriate applications.
- Has experience of overseeing welfare benefits staff or volunteers, and in supporting their training, caseload management, supervision and learning.
- Is a skilled communicator in emotionally challenging situations, using tact and empathy to elicit and communicate complex information
- The job is based at St Josephs Hospice, however some local travel is essential. Support and training will be provided in all aspects of the job by the hospice. The post holder will be accountable to the Social Work Manager.

We provide high quality specialist palliative care for patients with cancer and other life-threatening conditions across East and North London. We have a large team of clinical staff who work across community, in-patient and out-patient services delivering individualised, responsive and holistic support to patients and their families/carers.
