Main duties of the job
What Youll Do
As a Laboratory Practitioner, youll play a vital role in supporting our embryologists with routine procedures, including:
Diagnostic semen analysis
Sperm cryopreservation
Oocyte collection
Surgical sperm retrieval
Embryoscope annotations
Youll also help maintain the highest standards in our embryology laboratory through meticulous record keeping, equipment maintenance, and audits.

Job responsibilities
Job Purpose
To support embryologists in routine laboratory procedures, maintain accurate records, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. This role involves performing diagnostic andrology and embryology tasks following training and competency assessment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Perform diagnostic semen analysis and sperm preparation, cryopreservation, thawing, and surgical retrieval according to SOPs.
- Assist with oocyte collection and embryo transfer procedures within competency limits.
- Prepare gradients and culture dishes using aseptic technique.
- Monitor CO cylinders, liquid nitrogen levels, and perform alarm testing and data downloads.
- Maintain accurate records of clinical activities, cryopreserved material, and semen assessments.
- Support embryologists with witnessing and double signing in line with HFEA regulations.
- Participate in external quality control schemes (e.g., NEQAS).
Laboratory Maintenance & Audit
- Conduct routine equipment monitoring, calibration, and validation.
- Perform stock checks, maintain consumable levels, and manage traceability systems.
- Assist with audits of cryopreserved material and laboratory cleaning according to SOPs.
Compliance & Governance
- Adhere to HFEA Code of Practice, Care Standards Act, Data Protection Act, and COSHH regulations.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and follow Good Laboratory Practice.
- Complete mandatory training (health & safety, fire, manual handling).
Teamwork & Communication
- Liaise with other departments and Care units as required.
- Attend lab and unit meetings and support administrative tasks when needed.
- Be prepared to travel to other Care units if required.
