Job summary

Youll perform routine laboratory procedures including preparing gradients/culture dishes for use in laboratory procedures, stock checks, management of consumables, topping up nitrogen tanks and cleaning.

Those are just some of the day-to-day Technician tasks, but thats not all the role is, well support your training and development as you progress and learn more - all the way through to diagnostic semen analysis and cryopreserving semen samples.

Well provide a fantastic grounding in how labs work and are managed, along with providing a foundation in embryology techniques.

Main duties of the job

About you:

It would be good if you have a degree in Biology, Biological Sciences or Life Sciences however thats not essential. What is, is that you have an interest in working in a scientific setting like our busy laboratory full of Embryologists where you can observe and learn and start your career.

Youre a team player who works collaboratively, youre a self-starter who is able to complete tasks alone once youre shown.

Attention to detail cannot be stressed enough, this is a medical environment and mistakes are extremely costly to everybody involved.

Excellent communication (written and verbal) is required as youll be dealing with people from all backgrounds and disciplines.

Location/Salary:

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract based at Seacroft Hospital, York Rd, Leeds LS14 6UH, we have free onsite parking. This is a full-time role working across 08:00-16:00 Mon-Fri (with some occasional weekends required).

Job responsibilities

As a Laboratory Technician youll provide support to embryologists in some routine procedures following training and competency assessment. To assist with the maintenance of the Embryology laboratory, including record keeping, equipment maintenance and audit. As a member of the Care Family, you will carry out your roles in a way that supports and delivers our shared values. You are caring, patient focused and committed to do your best. Role accountabilities and duties: Clinical duties To perform diagnostic semen analysis according to standard operating procedure (SOP). To participate in the completion of the NEQAS external quality control scheme for semen analysis. To prepare gradients and culture dishes for use in laboratory procedures, ensuring aseptic technique is used. To monitor and record CO2 cylinder levels and changing of cylinders in a timely manner. To level check and fill liquid nitrogen dewars according to the laboratory schedule, including alarm testing and DARCA downloads. To prepare documents for the transport of gametes and embryos to and from other fertility clinics, including relevant consent forms. To support embryologists in witnessing and double signing in accordance with HFEA regulations and Care SOPs. To undertake routine equipment monitoring as necessary, as well as calibration and validation of all laboratory equipment. To perform routine stock checks and maintaining agreed levels of consumables, liaising with the embryology team to submit orders as required. To maintain, monitor and audit the consumable and reagent traceability system. To assist with auditing of cryopreserved material and associated records. To assist with lab cleaning and maintenance according to SOP, ensuring glass and sharps bins are changed regularly and benches are cleaned daily. To ensure stocks of paperwork and embryology stationery are available in the laboratory. To assist the Embryology Administrator where required for notes retrieval and filing and sending reports to satellite units and referring clinicians. To liaise with other departments and other CA Care RE units as required. To attend lab and unit staff meetings as required. To be prepared to travel to other Care units as and when required. Systems and digital processes To maintain accurate records of all clinical activities performed and to prepare treatment cycle paperwork such as lab sheets / work sheets. To maintain accurate records of cryopreserved gametes and embryos. To ensure accurate records of Semen Assessments are kept. To assist in embryology data collection. Governance and safety Together, with the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring that all processes are followed in accordance with the standard operating procedures. Maintain accurate and timely records. Ensure role is performed in compliance with the HFEA Code of Practice. Proactively use the Datix incident reporting system to record any incidents and near misses. Act with integrity, being open and honest so that we learn from each other and achieve better outcomes. Support quality management practices including participating in audit activities. Follow Infection Control and Prevention policies and requirements. Comply with the Health and Safety policies with particular reference to procedures to be followed in the event of a fire and to report all accidents and untoward incidents to the Health and Safety officer. Undertake mandatory training and actively participate in the learning pathways provided by the Company. To ensure adherence to COSHH, Good Laboratory Practice and HFEA guidelines and CARE SOPs. Confidentiality and data Maintain a high level of confidentiality at all times in accordance with the HFEA Code of Practice and Cares standard operating procedures.
