Job summary
Were looking for an experienced and confident Interim Day Ward Manager to lead a high-flow Day Surgery Unit within an NHS provider organisation. This is a pivotal leadership role with responsibility for delivering safe, effective and compassionate care across multiple specialties, including Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics and Endoscopy. Youll provide visible clinical leadership, oversee patient flow and bed management, and ensure consistent, high-quality care for all patients NHS-funded and self-pay alike. Hours dependent on working clinically to support the teams. Department open from 0730 to 1730, Mon-Friday with nominated late staff including the Interim Ward manager. Hours flexible depending on clinical need to complete over 4 days or 5 days. Main duties of the job
- Providing strong clinical and operational leadership to a multidisciplinary day surgery team
- Overseeing the full patient journey from admission through to discharge and post-discharge care
- Managing capacity, patient flow and bed utilisation in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment
- Working closely with Theatre and Endoscopy colleagues to optimise pathways and minimise delays
- Leading on clinical governance, patient safety, PSIRF implementation and incident management
- Driving quality improvement, audit and service development initiatives
- Supporting, developing and motivating registered nurses and healthcare support workers
- Promoting a positive, inclusive culture focused on safety, learning and continuous improvement
About us
- Registered Nurse (Adult) with current NMC registration
- Significant post-registration experience in an acute surgical and/or day surgery environment
- Proven leadership experience within a high-flow clinical setting
- Strong understanding of clinical governance, patient safety, PSIRF and quality improvement
- Confidence managing patient flow, operational pressures and complex clinical priorities
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines
- A compassionate, values-led leader who inspires teams and champions high standards of care
