Main Duties/Responsibilities

LEAD/ADVISORY

Provide comprehensive guidance and support in the development of ultrasound policies and procedures

Develop best practice guidelines across Ultrasound services in accordance with current national and local standards

Work within the Management Team and Governance lead to ensure all aspects of clinical governance are adhered to

Provide Clinical leadership in Accreditation processes

Undertake site visits to assess quality and performance in Practice and promote confidentiality at all times.

Demonstrate adherence and partake in the development of BMSG policies and procedures.

Comply with Organisational policy on Safeguarding, ensuring compliance with mandatory training and development and adherence to up to date processes.

Accurately record relevant information in appropriate format.

Communicate with all members of the clinical and administrative teams in a professional manner and be able to convey relevant information to and receive feedback from same.

Demonstrate adherence to and actively develop Information Governance requirements

Instigate and participate in audit/research activities

Undertake and oversee Clinical Governance with particular respect to quality, audit and risk management.

Comply with Organisational policy on Safeguarding, ensuring compliance with mandatory training and development and adherence to up to date processes.

Take responsibility for the care of all equipment used.

Demonstrate understanding of and promote adherence to local and National Health and Safety policies and procedures.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

• Maintain professional competencies and CPD
• Take ownership and fulfil the requirements of any required Statutory and Mandatory training
• Plan and take ownership of Ultrasound mandatory meetings
• Plan, take ownership of and delegate clinical audits
• Take part in MDT and education meetings

CLINICAL/TECHNICAL

Demonstrate delivery of high standards of care.

From the clinical information available on the referral request, determine the type of ultrasound examination required.

Positively identify all patients prior to the examination

As part of the clinical examination take a brief history from the patient to confirm and expand on the clinical information already available.

Select the correct equipment, including ultrasound transducers and technique and perform the appropriate ultrasound examination to provide the diagnostic information required. Produce either hard copy or digital images of the examination for long term storage of the clinical record.

Provide a written independent diagnostic report of the clinical results for the referring clinician.

Ensure all urgent findings are communicated appropriately and the patient directed accordingly

In order to maintain accuracy of clinical records, ensure that full patient and examination data is entered onto the patient management system.

Run Quality Assurance checks on equipment, and action as appropriate

Respect the privacy and dignity of patients and other staff at all times.

Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues

Demonstrate a firm involvement in clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit, including participation in the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continuous and safe clinical practice

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Registration as a radiographer with the Health Professions Council. Evidence of CPD.
• BSc or Diploma. (Radiography or relevant healthcare equivalent).

Desirable

• Evidence of further postgraduate study

Organisational

Essential

• Demonstrable appreciation of patient care and confidentiality (CV &Interview)
• Proven knowledge of the requirements of a Sonographers role in the care of patients, their visitors and carers, and to colleagues (Interview)
• Implications of the Data Protection Act and Caldicott Principles (CV & Interview)
• Infection Control training, Manual Handling and Patient Transfer training, Health and Safety Awareness training, (CV & Interview)
• To be without clinical risk in respect of the equipment being used (Interview)
• Demonstrable flexibility to work the shifts required (Interview)
• Proven diligence in CPD activity (CV & Interview)
• Be resident in an area which is reasonably commutable to the location of the role (Interview)
• Eligibility to drive in the UK (applicable to mobile roles) (CV & Interview)

Desirable

• Ability to work additional hours at short notice to fulfil unexpected clinical requirements (Interview)

Experience

• Competent use of ultrasound equipment (Interview)
