Job summary
As a Phlebotomist, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently collecting blood samples from patients in hospital wards, outpatient clinics, and community settings throughout South Essex. You will ensure correct procedures are followed in specimen handling, using appropriate PPE, and contribute to the accuracy and reliability of pathology testing that supports patient care.
Main duties of the job
- Undergo comprehensive training in venepuncture theory and practice through our Phlebotomy Academy.
- Apply your training across hospital wards, outpatient departments, and local community clinics.
- Deliver safe and professional blood sample collection, following correct order of draw and infection control protocols.
- Work as part of a supportive, multidisciplinary team across varied shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.
- Provide excellent patient interaction, ensuring comfort and dignity during procedures.
- Travel to community locations as part of your regular duties, requiring use of your own vehicle.
- Collect blood specimens from patients in a variety of settings using safe and hygienic techniques.
- Correctly label, handle, and dispatch specimens in line with organisational policies and procedures.
- Maintain high standards of patient care, ensuring a compassionate and reassuring approach.
- Accurately complete all relevant documentation and records in electronic and manual systems.
- Adhere to PPE usage, infection prevention measures, and safety protocols at all times.
- Participate in weekend and bank holiday shift rotations.
- Attend all required training, including first aid and manual handling.
- Provide feedback to the team to help improve phlebotomy service delivery.
- Engage in personal development activities and maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices.
